Sometimes, when a new entry is first up, the "Back to Previous Post" link in the left-hand column points to some random Other Post, not to the actual Previous Post. This straightens itself out after just a few minutes, but for those few minutes it can be confusing.

comment from Jimcat Kasprzak on 2.Nov.05

New Jersey has its general elections next week, including the gubernatorial race. Up until now, I've been opposed on principle to voting a straight party ticket -- and since I moved to New Jersey, I haven't voted for a Democratic candidate for governor (I actually liked Whitman, and couldn't stand McGreevey or Schundler four years ago).

But anything that will stick it to the Republicans is a good thing this year (and every year until they're out of the majority). And it doesn't hurt that Corzine is actually a likeable, competent candidate. My biggest worry is that his leaving the Senate opens up a seat, but New Jersey tends to pretty solidly back Democrats for the Senate.

Although it's not a Congressional election year, it will be worth keeping an eye on how the votes swing in those states that have major elections this month.

Jimcat:

Corzine's move from the Senate to the State House is, it seems to me, preparation for a run at the White House. I'm neutral on him for the moment; on the one hand, he's a politician. On the other, he was the highly successful CEO of Goldman Sachs, which demonstrates (to me, at least) that he has the administrative ability needed in a governor and/or President.

Unfortunately, I don't get to vote for him. All I get is to vote against Bloomy.

How is this "defense industry" to kneel before me? Are my praises to be sung as footnotes in their paperwork? You will stop giving these corporations your wealth. I suggest you put the money into your own schools and health care, so that I may have intelligent, healthy servants. I will indulge your wishes if you all want a Westernized, unpopular regime in Iraq, and I too shall gloat in its troubles, but it will not be done at my expense.

C-SPAN has a RealAudio (sorry!) link up to Reid's speech on the floor yesterday (sections of which statement included in an earlier post by Teresa), at the end of which he invokes Rule 21. Nice review of the Republican stiffing of Phase II over the last 20 months. I love the part at the end when he pulls the piece of paper from his pocket and executes his Secret Plan of Action.

The video lasts about 20 minutes, as they say on C-SPAN.

rtsp://video.c-span.org/project/iraq/iraq110105_reid.rm

I wish they would put up the floor speeches given by Sen. Roberts (backing and filling) and Sen. Rockefeller (pissed and precise) after yesterday's closed session. Seen back-to-back, All Is Clear, as they say on... well... here, I guess.

Way to go, Harry -- comment #23 from shane

comment from shane on 3.Nov.05

Pet peeve.

The media I'm seeing, and some of the online commentary, reports this in terms of political maneuver and tactics: 'Democrats revolt'; 'Reid just changed the subject from Judge Alito...'; 'They got the bird flu conference off the headlines in about four hours'. Their side say it's dirty tactics. Ours say it's good tactics.

I know Harry's closure of the Senate isn't any actual result to any actual thing, but it seems to me that when Conservatives pose like this it isn't [mainly] assessed as maneuver and horse race. Doing so for 'our' actions undercuts them.

comment from Aboulic on 9.Nov.05

A good time for opposition all round, it seems.

The 90-day extention to holding without charge just got rejected in the Uk parliament.

This was a measure personally championed by Tony Blair (the word is that his Home Secretary Charles Clark was making offers of compromise, but 'Tough on Terror' Tony stopped him).

Under the amendment adopted by the House of Commons, the police can only hold someone arrested for terrorism offenses for 28 days (a doubling of the current 14).

This is the first time the Government has been defeated in the House of Commons since Tony Blair took office in '97.

I'm sure most people reading this are fairly familiar with the principles under which the UK Parliament operates, but I'll say that (as you know, Bob) in the British constitution there is only one criterion for who gets to be Prime Minister. He (or She) who can get MPs to vote for their bills gets to live at Number 10 Downing Street.
