It's 433 Park Avenue South -- PA South ENDS (tops out) at 34th Street, and the numbering of NYC streets is generally based on increments of 20 per block (i.e., a block would run from 380 to 399, with 400 beginning the next block).

So I suspect 433 is 21 to 22 blocks above where the city considers PASouth numbering to start--which would be around 8th Street, also the street on which Fifth Avenue begins.)

Anyone have a NYC telephone book handy? They (used to, at least) list the "translation codes" for most streets.

(As an aside to the aside: Most of NYC makes perfect sense, in that way. Even numbers on the South and West sides of the streets, counting West and East from 5th Avenue in increments of 100 per Avenue block, yada yada.

(This does, of course, exclude the area below 14th Street, where you can meet someone on the corner of 4th Street and 10th Street [or 11th or 12th, at least].)

On topic: Would love to make it, but it's Valerie's sixth birthday party that day, and the chance of still being alive that late in the day is virtually nil. Meanwhile, those wishing the hear at least Patrick should check out this post at Eat Our Brains, if you haven't already.

In general, there are 10 numbers on each side of the street per block (so streets that have addresses on only one side, like parts of 5th Ave., go up 10 numbers per block; most go up 20). Numbering for each avenue starts at the base of that avenue, with a few exceptions (Park Ave. South used to be 4th Ave., and when the northern part of 4th Ave. was renamed they kept the numbers).

Easiest way to figure out where an address is is by using the Palm application X-Man.

I think I'm glad I live in Chicago. Looking for 600 S. anything? It's just on the south side of 6th street. Northside numbers are a little harder, but only because the streets aren't numbered...it's still 8 blocks, thus 800 in street numbers, to a mile...

Thanks for the info, though, guys. It just tells me to let my dad navigate when we go to NYC. :D

#6: Good god, Los Blues Guys at early-90s Armadillicons. I had forgotten about some of that stuff. But I don't think I was on stage for the "I'm A Lumberjack / Mannish Boy" mash-up, mostly because I distinctly remember being in the audience laughing so hard I nearly pissed myself.

This, on the other hand, definitely includes me and Rory Harper having one of those descent-of-the-spirit duels to which lead guitarists are prone.

Burma Shave.

What they did, when a fellow collected the 900 empty jars, was send him to Mars, Pennsylvania. Which was great publicity.

Close: Burma Shave thought about Mars, Pennsylvania but ended up sending the guy to a town in Germany that was pronounced "Mars" but was spelled differently. Unfortunately my copy of The Verse by the Side of the Road is in storage or I could give you the correct spelling of the town
