But there will be another WorldCon and another ML party.

There's now a post for the Miracle Fruit tasting supraparty.

Even if you've already RSVP'd to the main post, could you re-RSVP and look over this page if you're interested in the tasting party?

We'd like to divide up the bringing of the most interesting drinks-Balsamic vinegars, for example-because they're most easily brought There and Back Again by a multitude of volunteers.

-- Unlike standard party drinks, other parties are unlikely to accept donations of these as leftovers (and if you bring a small bottle, it won't be hard to bring it home).
-- We'll only need enough for sampling and sipping.

Earl Cooley III @IV,

No. Acai is the pomegranate of 2009: a fruit high in antioxidants and hyped in health claims.

Miracle fruit (Synsepalum dulcificum) has a glycoprotein molecule, miraculin, that temporarily causes the tongue to taste sour/bitter flavors as sweet. This has an interesting and fun effect on foods where sour is a dominant flavor- it can make their overall flavor more complex (because you can taste the notes normally hidden behind the sour).

People have parties devoted to exploring this effect: that's what we'll be doing.

The Miracle Fruit tablets arrived today, and I did a mini taste test at lunch, using cafeteria selections.
While there were no lemons, several other commonly-tested foods (onions, granny smith apples, pickled veggies, vinegar) became much more interesting. And chilled cherry tomatoes tasted straight-off-the-vine.
