Jon Singer turned 60 today

It hardly seems possible, but there it is.

That must mean it’s also D. Potter’s 60th birthday.

Woo! Happy birthday, guys.

Jon Singer is ageless! But happy birthday, regardless. Hope there is cake and great rejoicing.

#2 ::: Patrick Nielsen Hayden ::: (view all by) ::: September 30, 2009, 10:42 PM:

Jon Singer and D Potter are one day older than the People's Republic of China?

I suddenly feel a strange birthday solidarity with them--being as I am, by some measures, one day younger than the Cuban revolution.

#3 ::: Terry Karney ::: (view all by) ::: September 30, 2009, 11:02 PM:

Felicitations to them both; it has been my great pleasure to spend minor amounts of time in their company.

#4 ::: Eileen Gunn ::: (view all by) ::: September 30, 2009, 11:12 PM:

Well, gee! I haven't even got the cards in the mail yet to the Chinese. Happy birthday, all 1,330,100,002 of you! Especially you two.

#5 ::: Matthew Austern ::: (view all by) ::: September 30, 2009, 11:13 PM:

Happy birthday, Jon and D!

#6 ::: Ericka Nielsen Barber ::: (view all by) ::: September 30, 2009, 11:15 PM:

Jon! I always remember you fondly. Thanks for the loan for the floor and for indulging my alien ways. Have a very happy birthday today and for many years to come!

#7 ::: Lydy Nickerson ::: (view all by) ::: September 30, 2009, 11:23 PM:

Happy Birthday, Jon. Many returns of the day.

#8 ::: Pat Kight ::: (view all by) ::: September 30, 2009, 11:29 PM:

In honor of the inimitable Mr. Singer, I'm drinking my evening tipple from the tea bowl he gave me when we met in Baltimore a few years back. And feeling much better about joining the 60-and-over club in a few months' time...

#9 ::: Serge ::: (view all by) ::: September 30, 2009, 11:35 PM:

Congrats, both of you!

#10 ::: Serge ::: (view all by) ::: September 30, 2009, 11:40 PM:

Patrick @ 2...

I'm one year younger than The Day The Earth Stood Still. My wife is the same age as NASA, while her middle sister was born literally while John Glenn was going up on his historical flight. (And did I ever mention that my marriage is 2 days older than Challenger's disastrous flight?)

#11 ::: Liza ::: (view all by) ::: September 30, 2009, 11:53 PM:

Happy birthday, indeed!

#12 ::: Mary Dell ::: (view all by) ::: October 01, 2009, 12:36 AM:

Happy Birthday!

#13 ::: Neith ::: (view all by) ::: October 01, 2009, 12:40 AM:

Happy Birthday, Jon, from a former denizen of the Avocado Pit.

#14 ::: Avram ::: (view all by) ::: October 01, 2009, 12:51 AM:

I'm exactly as old as the Australian dollar.

Happy Birthday, Jon!

#15 ::: Teresa Nielsen Hayden ::: (view all by) ::: October 01, 2009, 02:01 AM:

Neith, if I may ask, which Avocado Pitling are you?

#16 ::: Tom Whitmore ::: (view all by) ::: October 01, 2009, 02:05 AM:

And I'm exactly as old as ... myself.

Well, that's something anyway.

Happies, Jon and D!

#17 ::: David Goldfarb ::: (view all by) ::: October 01, 2009, 02:21 AM:

Happy birthday to you both!

#18 ::: Geri Sullivan ::: (view all by) ::: October 01, 2009, 02:54 AM:

Oh, my.

Happy now belated birthday to Jon and D.!

#19 ::: Judith ::: (view all by) ::: October 01, 2009, 04:16 AM:

I guess it's true. Everyone knows Jon! Nifty. Why doesn't he have a Wikipedia entry yet?

#20 ::: wkwillis ::: (view all by) ::: October 01, 2009, 06:07 AM:

I've like Dee and Jon for most of the thirty five years I've been in fandom. Which is something else I have in common with most of fandom.

#21 ::: Ginger ::: (view all by) ::: October 01, 2009, 06:22 AM:

Happy Birthday to Jon Singer, D. Potter, my partner, and my young cousin! An excellent group to share such an exalted day.

#22 ::: abi ::: (view all by) ::: October 01, 2009, 06:43 AM:

Gefeliciteerd aan jullie verjaardag, en lang zal jullie leven!

#23 ::: John Houghton ::: (view all by) ::: October 01, 2009, 08:22 AM:

Happy Birthday Jon, and bazillions more!

Judith #19:
Everyone knows Jon, so he doesn't NEED a Wikipedia entry.

#24 ::: Kip W ::: (view all by) ::: October 01, 2009, 10:01 AM:

I remember when he was 59 just like it was yesterday.

#25 ::: Harriet Culver ::: (view all by) ::: October 01, 2009, 10:18 AM:

Happy belated birthdays to Jon and D. (if a total stranger may add greetings to D!)

In emulation of Pat Kight, and in honor of Jon Singer, I'm sipping my morning Assam from the Singer bowl hand-sold to me by Jo Walton in Elise Matthesen's booth at -- I always forget which, Noreascon or Boskone. :-)

#26 ::: Chris Quinones ::: (view all by) ::: October 01, 2009, 10:46 AM:

I share a birthday with Bolivia, but Bolivia's a lot older.

OTOH, I was born during the 1968 Republican National Convention. Maybe that's why I find Nixon so compelling a fictional character.

Futurama did make Nixon up, right?

Many happy returns to Jon and D.!

#27 ::: Velma ::: (view all by) ::: October 01, 2009, 10:47 AM:

Happy birthday!

#28 ::: elise ::: (view all by) ::: October 01, 2009, 11:13 AM:

happy birthdays!

#29 ::: Jacque ::: (view all by) ::: October 01, 2009, 11:25 AM:

So, if we put Jon Singer and Kevin Bacon in a room together, would the Universe implode?

#30 ::: Bill Stewart ::: (view all by) ::: October 01, 2009, 12:18 PM:

Jacque, if the Universe can support Erdos-Bacon numbers, it can survive that. Besides, that's a very small set. The number of people who've been to a con with Jon Singer, or been to a con with someone who've been to a con with Jon Singer, etc. is a very rapidly expanding number, somewhat like an Ackerman function...

#31 ::: beth meacham ::: (view all by) ::: October 01, 2009, 12:22 PM:

Kevin Bacon says that Jon Singer says "Hi!".

#32 ::: Kathryn from Sunnyvale ::: (view all by) ::: October 01, 2009, 01:05 PM:

Kip@24,
And here I thought he didn't look a day over...nevermind.

Happy Birthday Jon! I am drinking tea in a made-cup from Japan, contemplating glazes, and remembering when the auction news came in Montreal.

#33 ::: Lizzy L ::: (view all by) ::: October 01, 2009, 01:18 PM:

Happy birthday, Jon and D!! How long have I known you guys? Um -- never mind. Only 5 years until Medicare! Woot!

#34 ::: Joel Polowin ::: (view all by) ::: October 01, 2009, 03:39 PM:

Happy birthday, Jon! (When you have a few minutes, we need to continue our discussion about funky particles.)

#35 ::: Randolph ::: (view all by) ::: October 01, 2009, 03:42 PM:

Well, happy birthday, John and D!

#36 ::: Xopher ::: (view all by) ::: October 01, 2009, 03:54 PM:

Happy Birthday both! It's comforting to know that people 10 years older than me are still so young.

#37 ::: Marilee ::: (view all by) ::: October 01, 2009, 07:00 PM:

Happy Birthday Jon & D! I don't use the bowl Jon gave me for tea -- it holds my political buttons and sits on the table in the foyer.

#38 ::: Dan Guy ::: (view all by) ::: October 01, 2009, 08:44 PM:

Happy Birthday, Jon!

#39 ::: Allan Beatty ::: (view all by) ::: October 01, 2009, 09:01 PM:

Happy birthday to the Technocrat of the Breakfast Table.

And happy birthday to D. Potter, who I've never met but always heard of.

#40 ::: Eli Cohen ::: (view all by) ::: October 01, 2009, 09:13 PM:

Happy birthday, Jon, and thanks for returning my magazine!

Neith #13: I second Teresa #15, which Pitling? Or at least, which cat was yours?

#41 ::: Magenta Griffith ::: (view all by) ::: October 01, 2009, 10:15 PM:

Happy Birthday to Jon, and to Isaac Bonewits, who also turns 60 today.

#42 ::: Bill Higgins-- Beam Jockey ::: (view all by) ::: October 02, 2009, 12:07 AM:

The number of people who've been to a con with Jon Singer, or been to a con with someone who've been to a con with Jon Singer, etc. is a very rapidly expanding number, somewhat like an Ackerman function...

I myself have been to a con with Ackerman!

#43 ::: Serge ::: (view all by) ::: October 02, 2009, 12:13 AM:

Bill Higgins @ 42... I myself have been to a con with Ackerman!

I haven't, alas, but I have been to a con with someone who did. (By the way, it was wonderful to see Ackerman featured in TCM's memorial film of those who passed away in 2008.)

#44 ::: Terry Karney ::: (view all by) ::: October 02, 2009, 12:54 PM:

Bill Higgins: I was babysat, sort of, by Forry (and Bob Clampett). One of the benefits of being young.

#45 ::: Don Fitch ::: (view all by) ::: October 02, 2009, 04:23 PM:

Happy birthday to these fine (and stimulating, and friendly, the few times I've interacted 1:1 with them) people, Jon & D., who are young enough to be my children (and almost grandchildren, technically, give or take a couple of years and not-all-that-unusual early puberty).

#46 ::: Erik Nelson ::: (view all by) ::: October 02, 2009, 11:55 PM:

Terry Karney #44:
Baby-sat by Bob Clampett? Is that the same Bob Clampett who was a Looney-Tunes director?

I am having visions of needing to make sure a kid is kept safe from falling anvils, TNT, Acme roller skates, animals wielding hammers, etc.

#47 ::: Stefan Jones ::: (view all by) ::: October 03, 2009, 02:46 AM:

#46: I have this picture in my head of Clampett trying to get young master Terry to wear a propeller beanie.

#48 ::: Terry Karney ::: (view all by) ::: October 03, 2009, 03:56 AM:

Eric Nelson: Yes that Bob Clampett, of Beanie and Cecil fame.

#49 ::: Roz Kaveney ::: (view all by) ::: October 03, 2009, 07:15 PM:

Congrats to Jon and Dee, and amazingly I will always be three months older than the pair of you.

#50 ::: Terry Karney ::: (view all by) ::: October 03, 2009, 07:53 PM:

Roz Kaveney:Congrats to Jon and Dee, and amazingly I will always be three months older than the pair of you.

Wow... I didn't know we had anyone more than 120 years old here.

:)

Thank you! (I've been blushing for a week.)
