Cooking question: colcannon and stamppot (and bubble and squeak, rumbledethumps, etc) seem to most often be made with potatoes and brassicas. Why are brassicas the most common add-in rather than carrots or spinach or something? Is it just that there's not much else you can do with leftover kale?

If someone is that determined not to notice you, I say it's a good time to test out your pickpocketing skills. It'd be like stealing the wallet off a mannequin!

I use mineral oil on my wooden cooking utensils. Does anyone know how well that stands up against the other options mentioned here?

Jumping off from the music sub-thread: anyone know of a professional recording of this Kyrie by Antonio Lotti?

Clifton Royston @214: We recently adopted a very shy cat. While she isn't quite as neurotic as Soba - she was okay with us being in the bathroom as long as we ignored her - she does seem to have many of the same issues. She was at the shelter because she hid (and got stuck) in an air duct at her last home.

Our current setup uses boxes and storage crates to block line of sight to the utility hallway, and all her stuff including her carrier is in there. We keep the hallway light off as much as possible. With that safe place to retreat to, she's getting a lot more comfortable with us.

Another thing to try is a Feliway plug-in. While the pheromone claims they make are probably bullshit, it does contain valerian, which has a similar-but-lesser effect on cats to catnip.

JESR @314: kalaloch was one of our traditional family vacations, too, with occasional side trips to ruby beach.

tom whitmore @16: my own quick test suggests that he searched on "robert m. fletcher" - without the quotes.

Tim Kyger @55: Fragano's "fucking slaveowner" referred to a dead guy. You just named a fellow commenter one of the worst things you can call a woman. I think you may have a bit of an equivalency problem.

Tim Kyger @50: Wait, you think Fragano is a sockpuppet?

Tracie @79X: I had a neat what-a-coincidence response, but then I realized nothing actually matched up - the Trader Joe's I was thinking of was next to Peach ORCHARD Dr, one town over from Arlington, and I went there with a bunch of AtlantIan fencers. So close.

COBRA right now is much less onerous than usual - I'm paying 35% of the normal cost, which (I think) is on par with what was coming out of my paycheck when I was employed. Neither here nor there as regards health insurance reform, but useful to know for people currently eligible for COBRA and not even considering it because of the normal cost.

Dan S. @ 16: I remember that one too. Try checking out recent Hugo/Nebula/etc nominees - those are usually the only short stories I read.

Distinguishing hooker and whore: I always thought of hookers being paid money for sex, whereas whores use sex in lieu of money to pay for things they are given. Whores are on the barter system, I guess.

James D. Macdonald @87: I'm pretty sure the outfit in your second link is supposed to be an anime reference. I would pick post-singularity Kimiko as the lust object, personally.

On a lighter note, I heartily recommend "Cannibal: the Musical" to any of you incapable of taking things too seriously.
Posted on entry Unmarked marriage ::: April 15, 2009, 04:47 PM:
I maintain that it's a problem of language. Marriage is entangled with religion, and the definition varies between religions. Government may not privilege one religion over another. The solution is for government to get its fingers out of the marriage business entirely: civil unions for all! Secular decisions (health care, taxes, etc) may only be made on the basis of civil union status, not on marriage status.

Kevin Riggle @168: Yes, indoors was the primary issue. I've actually been looking into something like a Trangia alcohol-burning stove. Any clues if there is a particular fuel likely to produce less CO than the others?

(Also, while laptops do tend to get warm with use, i don't think a netbook like the MSI Wind would be all that effective as a stove. The MSR WindPro, on the other hand...)

I always thought that right-to-work was in contrast with at-will states, in which an employer could fire you at will. If they're the same thing, what's the pithy phrase for states where your employer has to give notice and reason &etc before firing you?

I'll make sure to get some Sterno, then. Is it just propane and kerosene that you're not supposed to use indoors?

emergency preparedness question:
let us propose that the power and gas are out, and i am indoors. if i just want a damn cup of tea/soup/thing-involving-hot-water to warm back up, how do i boil the water?
