Cause from my understanding cows need to calve to start producing
milk. There's a 50% chance that they'll produce a bull calf
which... will just about certainly be put down.
Right about the calving. The bull calves aren't "put down". Well,
not on the dairy farms I've known. They are sold - for pet food,
I've always assumed.
Silly non-meat eaters ;) the baby bulls either remain a bull and go
on to foster future generations or they become steers (Rocky
Mountain oysters anyone?), go to a 'grow-out' type operation and
become steaks, yum!
;)
