In the mid-19th century, people engaging in the bit of westerward
expansionism known as the Gold Rush used to speak of "going to see
the elephant" as a way of describing the wonders they hoped to find
at the end of the trail.
I'm getting some poetic satisfaction out of the knowledge that, in
post-modern Europe, the elephant comes to see you.
