@Skwid: There are some issues with staying with a friend. Is he/she attending the con? If not, is your friend cool with your coming in at all hours? (That's assuming you like to go to parties.) If so, will you be dependent upon your friend for transportation, or will you have your own? Also, the convenience of staying at a nearby hotel cannot be overstated, especially for those of us who end up buying books by the pound. Then again, if you're not paying for a hotel, you have more money to buy books, or whatever else opens your wallet.

And you may think I'm being needlessly picky, but you buy a membership, not a ticket. The difference is more than semantic: it's a matter of attitude.

I'm sure many people here will be full of advice on how best to enjoy your first Worldcon, so I won't dish out any more.

I'm sure you're tired of hearing it, but congratulations! It's a long-deserved honor.

Odd coincidences:

I was reading this comment thread in bits and pieces while I waited for pages to load during the search quality rating work I do for Google. And lo, what search should come up but "whinnie the [ooh" (sick).

Perhaps the Old Ones are offended by Google's motto?

BTW, this thread has made me very glad to own an internets. Funniest thing I've read in ages. Damn talented poets.

Seth Gordon@82: A committee with Orthodox, Reform, and Conservative Jews? I'm surprised they got past Genesis. Hell, I'm surprised they agreed on the shape of the conference table.

I actually do work for Google on line. But they don't use spam to recruit new employees.

"Democracy is not something you believe in or a place to hang your hat, but it’s something you do. You participate. If you stop doing it, democracy crumbles."

Not that this crowd really needs reminding of that ....

WRT my friend the would-be novelist: Thanks so much to Sharon M. and Bernard for the link to the page at Neil Gaiman's blog, and to Tania@215 for the list of ML posts of interest. If this info doesn't help the guy, nothing will.

Thanks also to moe91@221 for the link about Provigil. (I take it because the medications I take for intractable migraines make me sleepy.)

Lurker here, glad to have found an open thread.

I just stopped an acquaintance who's an aspiring SF writer from paying $500 to have his novel printed so he'd have a book to impress publishers with.

He is (obviously) completely clueless about the entire process of submission and publication.

I know that this blog has published some great material on this subject, and (I believe) some collections of helpful links as well. I would like to send them to him. Can anyone point me there?

(I don't know if he's any good: I haven't read a word he's written. But I like him, and I'd like to help him out.)

Well, W. just replaced Generals Casey and Abizaid (both of whom had publicly expressed skepticism about a "surge") with a new General and Admiral who are more tractable. So much for, "He listens to the generals."

You'll get no argument from me. But the media still swoons for his "Straight Talk" shtick, and his poll numbers are great. If the GOP has the sense to nominate him in 2008, I think he'll be exceedingly tough to beat.

El-Bedawi also complained that he and the other homeless recruits were bussed home too late to vote themselves.

But I file this one under, "And this surprises you?"

Somewhat less comprehensively ...

Knowing that his war record shone,
His whole campaign he bet.
Swift boats are fast -- he should have known
That lies are swifter yet.

Steve Buchheit:

For those people scoffing at “shopping malls” being terrorist targets, here is a fun exercise. What would the effect be if somebody flew a 747 out of Minneapolis Airport into the Mall of the Americas at 9am on the Friday after Thanksgiving? Wouldn’t that be great TV for the Holidays.

I'm not talking about the Mall of the Americas, just average suburban shopping malls. And while, yes, terrorists could strike anywhere, suburban Milwaukee's not likely to be on their radar.

Funding is finite. It should go where the greatest threats are.

New York and Washington aren't to blame for your dwindling federal grants; the culprits are the Republican Congress and administration. They'd like you to blame it on 9/11, though.

Out here in flyover country, the Feds are awarding Homeland Security grants to suburban shopping malls. Apparently they are "Critical Infrastructure."

The terrorists hate our Crate & Barrels.

Rather late to be chiming in, but I second all of Patrick's comments. I am particularly impressed at what a leap Spin is from Wilson's previous work. My SF book group had a conference call with the author after reading it, and he indicated there would be a sequel of sorts; please let us know when that's no longer vaporware, Patrick.
