Bob@91: to be fair, and without knowing the specifics, if it came down to an argument about economics between Brad and Atrios (whoever they are) then I'd probably go with Brad every time...
To be perfectly honest, the whole idea that if you need amounts of expensive drugs you have to pay a hefty percentage still just seems bizarre, looking at it from an outside perspective.
I mean, someone needing $1000 worth of drugs will pay $438, while someone needing $5000 pays $3500 - even the starting point, the 438/1000 point, is crazy. Even more so when you're talking about 'seniors', which I assume is code for "people who've retired".

I think you've missed the purpose of the email. I don't believe it's actually to try and get together a "valid" petition - I can't imagine the people originating it really cared about such a thing.
The aim is more to spread the meme of 'illegal aliens taking *our* social security benefits' throughout the population.
I'm looking at learning BSL next year, so this is a nice co-incidence. I'll go and look at those with interest; even if it's the wrong language it could be handy. Thanks Teresa. :-)

Greg: leaving aside the rest of the arguments (for various reasons), one thing to recognise here is that you're creating a vicious circle. "Don't vote for third party candiates because they won't get in" more or less guarantees that they never *will*, because nobody votes for them.
But, hey, I've never really pretended to understand the American voting systems. It always has seemed pretty bizarre to me anyway. :)
(For what it's worth, our local council was purely Liberal Democrat, and is now split between Tory/Labour/LibDem - so voting third party does matter, at least here.)
Oh - I'm not saying that no voting stations are ever set up in pubs, but I've never been to any. The ones I've been to are usually in churches, community centres, that kind of thing. Can't imagine there's really that many set up in a pub.
Because, you know, all people in a party are all absolutely identical.
I must admit this kind of generalisation is something Making Light has been doing more and more often lately, and it's not good. I agree with Damien at #11 - think and vote, don't just vote for someone because of what party they're in.
(That said, I really hope Bush loses what remaining power he has...)

I have to confess I'm mostly with kjs3 here - the political entries really don't do anything for me (for a whole bunch of reasons), and I've found that I'm checking Making Light less and less often over the last few weeks.
Mind, this isn't to say you can't write whatever you want - it's your blog, obviously. :-) Just consider this a plaintive plea for some variety...
Lizzy: yes, but you're not a Bush voter. (I'm guessing.) If you were susceptible to whatever charm people think he has, then you would be. It's kind of a self-selecting response, in a way. :)
It might be that I don't fully appreciate things, not living in the US, but I can't help thinking that all the navel-gazing going on here is really not accomplishing anything much. Whatever Nader did or didn't do (and I have a certain sympathy with those who voted for him), whatever Gore or Bush did, that doesn't really matter now.
Remember - the election that matters is the next one. Not 2000, not 2004, but 2008. Make sure someone sensible wins that one. Same as we're going to try and make sure someone sensible takes over the UK at the next available opportunity. God help me, that may even involve voting for the Conservatives...
Charlie: never understood that attitude. It's not like the English usually support whoever's playing against Scotland.
Mind you, I suspect most of the time Scotland don't really register as significant enough to be against. ;-)
