Posted on entry Thomas M. Disch, 1940-2008 ::: July 06, 2008, 11:16 PM:
I'm sorry to hear Disch is gone.

I discovered The M.D. in the free book nook at my grandmother's senior's complex when I was about 13.

I negotiated special dispensation to borrow it, since I was only a near-permanent presence and not technically a resident.

That book scared the hell out of me, in an inspiring sort of way. So much so that I couldn't bring myself to return it.

Unfortunately, I have seen this phrase used in the context of "paying forward". Specifically by Mike Resnick in the context of his Alternate Whatever anthologies, whose quality become less distinguished as the series went on.

... 5. Hopes and dreams.

Dead on target. The first time this smoke got blown in my face was by a friend who was trying to sell Amway product.
