It's surreal living and working on the east side of Iowa City. Absolutely everything is fine. It was a beautiful day. Yet all that water is less than five minutes away.

Tomorrow I have to go to work at 6 am instead of 8 because half the people who were supposed to come in at 6 live on the other side of the closed stretch of I-80. But when I get off, I'm going to find a place to volunteer so I can stop feeling guilty for living on high ground.

I thought Mac was "son of" and O' was "descendant of" or some such thing. That comes from researching Irish names back in the early 90s when I was in my teens, and may be totally misremembered. But I do know the Irish use both and they mean slightly different things. Don't remember a Mc vs Mac explanation though.

I think the main reason you don't see more squirrels and raccoons as pets is because it's illegal if they're native to your area. Native squirrels are illegal in most states in the US, anyway. Apparently they can be litter trained and such, but they'd require a lot of supervision to keep them from getting into absolutely everything. I wouldn't have the patience for it.

I really did not remember that video. All I seemed to remember was the end, where the boy had glowing eyes and sang "Turn Around Bright Eyes." But, I do love that song. My favorite version of the moment is by a band called "Straight Outta Junior High" Which is about the maturity level of the rest of their songs from what I can tell, but their version of "Total Eclipse..." amuses me. I can't seem to find a link to it. I found it on Rhapsody.
Posted on entry A monthly family budget ::: July 19, 2006, 06:42 PM:
That's at least 14 times my annual income, and I'm doing fine. Eventually I'll even get out of the debt I got myself into in my twenties. If I married a man with that much, I'd certainly stay home. All I really want in life is to write novels and adopt children. 50,000 a year would probably cut it. It would take a couple years to get out of debt and save up for a down payment on a house and adoption fees, but it would work. 350,000 would get me the house paid for in the first year, and after that it would be cake.

My standards are pretty simple though. If I had that much I'd definitely pay someone to clean, and have a nicer computer, and travel a lot more, but I can't imagine thinking it wasn't enough to live on. Maybe she's never skipped meals for lack of funds like I did right after college, so she doesn't realize what "not enough to live on" really means.

Personally, I don't think SUVs are harder to see around than minivans, and where I'm from their primary purpose seems to be to replace the minivan, so I do not have the grudge against them that many here seem to. I drive a Honda Insight, so I have trouble seeing around just about everything. The only time I have serious trouble though is in parking lots, and that is usually with full size vans or pickup trucks, though SUVs are annoying. I tend to be aware that I am the smallest thing on the road, and drive accordingly.

Per the Prius part of the conversation: I don't think my acceleration is any worse than the average car. I believe I do have to downshift sooner to get up steep hills than I might in a non-hybrid, but I just learned to adjust. It's the perfect car for me, as with my driving habits I only buy gas once a month (or every six weeks recently) and I'm always surprised by what I can fit in the back. I wouldn't drive a Prius, because the trunk is too small, and I have more need for carrying things than passengers. But I will always drive a hybrid of some sort, because I could never bring myself to raise my monthly gas budget over $30.

Anyway, that's contributing to the car tangent. I could comment on feminism, but I have nothing useful to add.

Pro-life leads to the idea that sex is only acceptable for procreation purposes only when you're talking about the people who are against both abortion and birth control. There are a lot of people who hold that position, but it's not the logical extension of the belief that a fetus is a human being. Logically, anyone who wants to reduce the number of abortions in the world should be for increased access to and education in the use of effective methods of contraception, so that the number of unplanned pregnancies will decrease. Unfortunately there does seem to be a significant segment of the self- appointed moral police who think that people should stop having sex, and are therefore not only against abortion but also contraception and any kind of social program that will help the mother if she skips the abortion and has the child. These people are more anti-choice than pro-life. If you have sex you should suffer, seems to be their motto. It's hard to have any respect for them, while those whose sole argument is that the baby's rights should be considered as well as the mothers at least have an arguable point.
