TroyLiss, when KDays came in Edmonton each year, the cops would randomly pull over one vehicle from out of province when coming up Highway 2, and reward those folks with several free days in town: hotel, meals, events (mostly around KDays), and probably more. I don't know if they still do it, especially since there is no KDays anymore.

I've always liked Steve Earle's take on it, that he objects to the state deciding in his name who should live and who should die.

Here in Canada, Robert Willie Pickton was just found guilty with 6 findings of 2nd degree murder in a case where 20-odd more murders may result in another trial. There was almost no baying for blood, and the concern over it being 2nd rather than 1st-degree was abated when people saw he could (and indeed did) get the same sentence. The only real amount of noise made was over how much the trial cost taxpayers.

I was never lucky enough to know him, but had actually contemplated phoning him two weeks ago to thank him for his temperate words in the middle of the stupid Affair elsewhere on the web. What a loss.

Definitely avoid sodas. As a not-so-bright teen, I was in Japan on a high school band trip, during a major heat wave. Brightly, I drank only Coke for 3 days straight. No surprise I collapsed and had to be hauled off the hospital for some IV fluids and a stern lecture. In Japanese.
