That's sort of like asking with with an exceedingly good pair of
ears and sense pitch how they identify A 440. You just . . . do. It
sounds like A 440.
It's the same skill set that's useful in spotting plagiarized text
before you locate the source, or dating and locating the origins of
a text of unknown provenance. Part of it is experience, both in
identifying unknown texts and verifying that identification, and
part is experience reading an enormous quantity of texts of all
sorts (or listening to lots of As).
