#118, 121: Oh no, not the official reaction. That's a different issue.

I'm talking about the average Joe noticing them in the first place, in order to begin the chain of "gee, what's that" and "does it belong there" and "is it scary" and "should I tell somebody about it".

Much has been made of the fact that numerous sightings were all reported at about the same time. That becomes a whole lot less suspicious if the silly things had just then lit up.

#123: I'm not sure that a single case invalidates the claim. That one could have been a malfunction. I would still like to find a reliable source regarding the majority of them.

#104: Listen, perhaps hundreds of thousands of people saw these things, in ten cities, over the course of weeks, and instantly evaluated 'em correctly.

One news story I saw last night said that while these things had been in place in multiple cities for multiple weeks, they had been left turned off--no blinky--and the ones in Boston were the first batch to be turned on.

Can anyone confirm that? If true, it puts the lack of previous reports in an entirely different perspective.

(Lurker decloaking 'cause, well, cats!)

One of my current feline masters^^^ companions has an unusual napping position.

Start from the basic sphinx, but then extend the neck and lower the chin until said neck and chin are stretched flat on the floor. Take one front leg--either will do--and angle it outward from the body at about 45 degrees. Point the toes of that same leg rearward in such a way that the paw is at a right angle to the foreleg. Hold position for one hour or longer. Repeat twice weekly.

Right here on the front page of Making Light there's an ad for the Sony Reader. It's not in the $50 range, but one might hope the price would come down if it catches on. Having the right device has been the showstopper for me where ebooks are concerned, and this looks interesting enough that I want to see it in person.

rhandir @ 38 -- How much space does a one-hour photo lab occupy? Sure, they're hurting now from digital cameras, but they were obviously a viable mode for many years. And I believe those have a few moving parts. Why wouldn't that be a business model for POD? Pay $X for a book if you come back tomorrow to pick it up, or $X+Y to get it in an hour.

[Lurker de-cloaking]

While reading about Pluto, I spotted this on the sidebar: Evolution Major Vanishes From Approved Federal List.

Sure it's just a clerical error.
