This is a good thing. Making Light lead me to BoingBoing and Cory Doctorow. Cory lead me back to Patrick and podcasts from WorldCon.
Brilliant podcast with George Takei.
Cory and Patrick's Podcast seem to be hyper-relevant to recent SFWA's misuse of DMCA... coincidence?

Let it leak.
It won't sink the ship.
ePiracy is one of the strongest and most proven forms of viral marketing available.
Some record labels are catching on...
Some authors and publishing companies may too.

If we end up with a draft I'm expat-ing. I still have an outstanding bet with my ol' brick and mortar bookstore manager that Bush will attempt to stay in a third term under some 'Doomsday Legislation' caveat ...

I hear there's a need for quality bookstores in Australia... who's in?

...that oddly mirrored part of my post. Apologies if that was my doing.

I'm happy that I served 9 1/2 years in the submarine force. Happy because I have no inactive service time to be recalled back into service. Happy because I was medically discharged (honorably) for service connected injuries and couldn't be recalled back even if they wanted me bad enough.

I remember my time on recruiting duty (just a few years back). There were tail-tell signs that Army and Marine Corps recruiting efforts were failing. Overall Army-Strength and MC-Strength numbers were suffering, stop-loss came into effect, and then there was the Blue to Green initiative program allowing Navy and Air Force active and reserve members to go Army --- I knew then we were hinting around a draft --- hell, it's been on The Hill for a while now.

jmmcdermmott @ #51 Rich kids don't join the military is bunk?
My experience in military recruiting is that based upon ethnic and economic backgrounds the areas (or zip-codes as they are divided up)with the highest propensity for enlistment were black and hispanic low to low-middle income families. I'm not saying that there aren't rich white kids enlisting... but the military spends billions of dollars in effective marketing like any company to recruit "diversity applicants." For the Navy and Air Force there have been recent restrictions (or goaling requirements) to contract Hispanic, or Black Upper Mental Group (HUMGEE/HUMG or BUMGEE/BUMG scoring higher than 50 or for Air Force >62 on AFQT composite score) --- the last I left recruiting the Army was taking waivers hand over fist on to recruit "diversity applicants." Then there was the coveted A/PIUMG (Asian/Pacific Islander Upper Mental Group)...
I also disagree with what you said regarding the military: "It's not like it's the only way off the streets, you know," for a lot of people I came across in the Miami-Ft. Lauderdale region it was.

Actually pericat @ 15 there's a lot of points and great usage behind SL.
A number of programming courses at major colleges and universities use SL to teach primitive modeling and script behaviors.
There are many corporations which also maintain a SL identity and even use SL as a venue for telecommuting and boards meetings.
There's been extensive research done in human behaviorial studies--- especially interesting to myself is how in a "free form" environment people will still tend to make laws, regulate, and seek out order. Huge amounts of interest is still being taken in watching RL/SL subcultural mirroring.
Patterns emerge beyond viral marketing algorythms in SL that have caused combinatorical mathematicians to take a pause and re-evaluate formulae.
There's PhD disertations being written and defended on SL as we speak...
Now granted a lot of SL content is geared towards the 'adult' and 'mature' crowd, but you really have to wonder if that is because that's the type of people it attracts or perhaps when hidden behind a screen and safely represented by an avatar...most people just enjoy playing with their own id *snicker*.

Xopher @ 32 You're entitled to your own opinions. You're not entitled to your own facts. And you don't appear to know the difference.

Brilliantly stated Xopher. I might have to steal that.

...maybe TPB is actually Lori Prokop (of Book Millionaire Reality TV Show) who is also psychically linked to Martha Ivery and ALSO a board member of Airleaf Publishing and Bookselling. Oh there's a story in this and it should be sold to Publish America!

But seriously, a quote from TPBs most recent post: "I seriously don’t know why I keep making adolescent sex a metaphor of the publishing industry (and we all know that “people who speak in metaphors can shampoo my crotchâ€)–whoop–there I go again."

You know, I'll admit that I've approached the publishing industry with a (little more than a) tad of irreverence at times --- but even on my snarkiest day I would never send any of my material to this editor regardless of who she might really be. I hope in the hungry self-absorbed world of the unpublished writer wannabe there is at least a modicum of something left that maybe/kinda/sort of looks like standards (just a little bit like standards please?)---and I hope those standards are never lowered down far enough to allow this kind of tripe to be taken seriously.

*edit* ePubs are now hardprinting their crap with the same wonky DAZ/Poser3d covers. Nevermind. No standards. Let tripe reign.*

an elite cabal runs publishing
Well, okay --- sure. But at least they like to drink and party at cons ;)
