Ginger @42:

Security theater is why I absolutely hate air travel. I'd rather drive or take the train than allow myself to be subjected to the whims of idiots with guns and an overinflated sense of importance.

At first I wasn't sure whether you meant the security guards or the terrorists.

It's obvious -- Al Qaeda's #3 is required to wear a red shirt.

I like defictionalization.

The Zweite Enzyklopädie von Tlön (Second Encyclopedia of Tlön) that was on exhibit at the Gutenberg Museum in Mainz this fall. I was kinda disappointed by it actually. It seemed more like an exercise in creative book production than in creative encyclopedia production. Which I guess is appropriate for a printing museum...

I still remember reading this interview from 1999: Onion AV Club interview with Ray Bradbury

O: Fahrenheit 451 is one of the definitive anti-censorship books. What do you think of the renewed efforts to restrict or regulate the content of books, movies, music, and the like?

RB: That's not censorship. You have to have taste. You know, there's a hell of a lot in movies that doesn't have to be there. I'll give you a good example: Mel Gibson is doing a new version of Fahrenheit 451 next year some time. There are nine screenplays—nine screenplays! Now, if you know the book, you can just shoot the book off of the page. It's an automatic screenplay. Well, I gave them one screenplay, and there are eight more by various screenwriters. And to give you an example of what should not go into a film—and it's not censorship, it's taste—there's one of the scenes by this other screenwriter. The fire chief comes to visit Montag, and Montag's wife, Mildred, says to him, "Would you like some coffee?" And the fire chief then says, "Do bears shit in the woods?" Do you want that in a film?

...

RB: No, it doesn't. At least, I don't think it does. They imagine it does. It all started with Saturday Night Fever about 20 years ago. In the very first scene, the guys drive up and call him a "fuckhead." That's the point where I got up and left the theater with my wife. I said, "I don't need that." That's where it all started, about 20 years ago.

O: It's one thing if it's a matter of personal taste, but isn't it bad if someone else imposes their own tastes? Isn't that a dangerous direction to go, or can the task be handled responsibly?

RB: I'll handle it for them. If they want, I'll kick 'em!

re: the British and rabies, you know where else doesn't have any rabies? California. Know what separates California from the rest of rabies infested North America? Nothing, absolutely nothing. Stupid! You so stupid!

(Sorry, UHF flashbacks)

Apropos of the last paragraph, i.e. nothing, I remember hearing raccoons fight in my backyard in Palo Alto. Freaked my cats out.

Speaking of cats, I found out about California not having rabies when I went to the vet shortly after arriving in the state to give my pets their annual rabies shot. My vet recommended against rabies vaccination since the last case of rabies in california was in 1972 and the vaccine had been correlated with some sort of feline leukemia.

In other news, as a resident of a German city I can't say I'm exactly looking forward to a raccoon invasion...

There's a song that at least until 24 hours ago was #1 on the German singles charts titled '54, '74, '90, 2006 (the first three dates being years Germany has won the World Cup). Made a pretty decent football chant. Then there's the ever-popular "Berlin! Berlin! Wir fahren nach Berlin!" Though today I guess it should read Stuttgart.
