Well I think the really damaging thing about Dean's, erm, eruption was that it can be linked to a series of acts that don't paint him in a good political light. The larger issue that I don't really being seen raised in these comments is that Dean's campaign team screwed up Iowa bad and there isn't a ton of signs that he can turn this mismanagement around. Working around that ghastly yelp is fairly easy but the steps to make a better campaign are much harder.

Just bear in mind Patrick that one problem with using a Server class product as your OS is that you will have to use server versions of common utilities. I'm thinking of things such as anti-virus and defragmentation programs. It can be a bit of a pain.

Little Green Footballs also was caught up in the DOS which made me laugh because those wacky LGF commentors used to stage their own DOS attacks against sites they didn't care for like IndyMedia.

Well the federal Liberals have been allowed to become somewhat corrupt and complacent by the Canadian Right's choice of a circular firing squad. One point about the basic rundown link, the B.C. Liberals are not the provincial arm of the federal Liberals but something more to the right. In short, B.C. is governed by a right-wing party calling themselves Liberals. :)

The church is doing the same sort of stuff here in Canada too. We've been presented with about a week's worth of not so thiny disguised warnings to Canada's senior Liberal politicians, who are all Catholic, along the lines of this:

"Earlier this week, Bishop Fred Henry of Calgary said Mr. Chre9tien [Canada's Prime Minister], who is also Catholic, is jeopardizing his "eternal salvation" by legally changing the traditional definition of marriage. The outspoken bishop reiterated his comments at a news conference in Calgary yesterday. And he again questioned how Catholic MPs could in good conscience vote for gay marriage 97 something the church clearly condemns."

Thank you Patrick for the funniest thing I've read today, and yes I have a bleak sense of humour.

Well of course living in Canada means that one is a part of the continental craziness sweeping over us. I'm not saying that it's as as bad in the U.S. but I've been in fierce arguments with friends over the war. There is also the spectacle of the Alliance - one of two major right wing parties on Canada - and also one founded on the ideal of democratic grassroots populism saying that in the case of war, Canadian popular opinion is wrong and Canada should have forces in the war. Erm, except that we do have ships enforcing the blockade in the Persian Gulf and in fact have more forces in theatre than say, Spain, who are a paid-up member of the Coalition of the Willing. We have another spectacle in Paul Celluci, the U.S. ambASSador lecturing Canadian politicians who (gasp!) dared to be critical of the U.S. He said that the U.S. would be there for Canada if the tables were turned so I think we should, I dunno, invade Brazil (Canada and Brazil have had nasty trade disputes around subsidies for aircraft manufacturers) and get our American pals to ante up some troops.

Let's not forget that US troops managed to kill more Canadians then the enemy did in Afghanistan too while we're at it.

I loved the use of Missile Command in the top sidebar head. Oh and "I'm supporting my activist girlfriend" was fun too.

One mild quibble is that the BBC story says Collins is a Lieutenant Colonel and not just an Lt.

And of course zipper, there's quite a long list of "leftists" who never supported the list o' nasties you posted. How about all the righties what supported Iraq back in the day there old son?

Hey I'm okay with "a reckoning for France & Germany" just as long as there's a reckoning for Bush, Cheney, et al. ;)

This kinda sums it up:

"You're all so idealistic that you believe a new progressive movement can be built without significant support from African-Americans, women, gays, or organized labor. If that isn't idealism, I'd like to know what is."

I don't know exactly what I'd call it, instead of idealism, though right now the lead is a tie between solipsism and elitism.

It's not just the cricket coverage that gets that sort of treatment at The Guardian. The match reports of certain tired, unimaginative football teams (cough, Liverpool, cough) often feature a lot of indirect stuff. Case in point:

"36 mins: More lull. "I have spent all day today basking in the Peruvian heat and looking forward to listening to the game tonight live on the BBC Radio Scotland website," writes David Shanks. "My hopes have, however, been dashed. Please make up for this with some inspirational text commentary, unlike your efforts last night." Careful now Mr Shanks - I don't come around to where you work and tell you how to clean toilets."

Another big story of the day is Richard Perle suing that "closest reporter to a terrorist" Seymour Hersh in the U.K. over this story. I am disapointed that Perle went to the U.K. because Canada has about as bad a set of plaintiff-friendly libel laws. uggabugga has an updated chart that shows the linkages revealed by the Hersh article including one between Adnan Khashoggi and Theresa LePore(!).

I stand my assertion that Nader voters who believe that Gore=Bush should choke to death on such facile and false verbiage. Here in Canada's Left Coast we just had a similar scenario with the NDP and Green Party. Way too many people wasted their votes on the un-electable Green Party and the NDP wound up with 2 out of 75 seats. The ruling Liberal Party won't even let the NDP act as, and this includes matters such as funding and question period time slots, the Official Opposition due to the NDP's not having 5 seats. Both the 2000 presidential election and the most recent B.C. provincial election show that what the Green Party does best is strengthen right-wing administrations. That is why voting Green is a misguided choice for progressives.
Posted on entry Ashes. ::: March 12, 2003, 02:24 AM:
Nader voters can moan all they like about how their choice still seems right, though I hope they choke to death on any assertions that there's no difference between Gore and Bush. Their misguided choice is one that just keeps getting worse and worse and I trust they have the intellectual honesty to admit that.
