Raven, this is politics at its messiest. We will never get 'steak,' we will never get 'salmon,' but if we encourage and defend our representatives with enough vigor, we might get edible sausage out of the deal.

Your Daniel Burnham quote is a welcome sight. I'm a displaced Chicagoan, and I agree – it will take something Big And Mighty to displace the mythical boogeymen from the public consciousness.

LLA@579:

She's been a tour guide to the area, but there are mobility and health issues right now. You're projecting a couple of weeks away, though, so perhaps something can be arranged.

My esteemed spouse has made up a map of the the Los Angeles garment district. It's a work in progress, imperfect and not canonical, toward an eventual guide book to the area.

She's willing to share it with you for your trip. If this would be helpful, let me know and she'll find somewhere to post it for you.

Steampunk Enthusiasts Alert – Zeppelin Seen Over Long Beach, CA

There is a zeppelin . . . well, a rigid airship, at any rate . . . flying out of Long Beach, CA, this weekend.

http://airshipventures.blogspot.com/2009/05/good-morning-long-beach.html

Its home base is San Francisco. We live along the approach path for blimps, lightships and port helicopter traffic, so she has flown over us several times in the last three days.

Compared to the blimps, she is fast! Rides are a bit pricey, over $300, but they've sold out for the weekend and will be back for Fourth of July.

Only thing that could be cooler would be if she were bicycle-powered.

This just in, from the LA Times:

"Reporting from Washington -- The Supreme Court rejected appeals today from two hold-out counties in Southern California that object to the state's 13-year-old medical marijuana law and claimed it should be struck down as violating the federal drug-control act.

"Without comment, the court turned down the pair of appeals.

"The action likely will clear the way for patients in San Diego and San Bernardino counties to seek county-issued identification cards that show they are eligible to possess and use marijuana.

"These identification cards have been required under state law since 2004, but the two counties have refused to issue them. Their lawyers had asserted the state's authorization for using medical marijuana conflicted with the zero-tolerance policy set by federal law."

I am amazed and pleased.

The question must be asked; is 4E in SAG or in AFTRA?

McCain has called Obama and conceded.

Yeah, Patrick, I'm gobsmacked too.

"Mother Rosa sat down so Martin could march. Martin marched, and that meant Barack could run. Barack ran so our children will be able to fly."

The Torch Has Been Passed. I'm trying to imagine how different the world will be after this night. I'm trying really, really hard to imagine what this means for my granddaughters and grandsons . . . what a night!

We think of him now as the writer and interviewer; back when I first saw him, he was an actor and writer in the early days of Chicago television, doing the live drama that vanished so soon.

His nickname came about because he was very taken, at a young age, with the novel STUDS LONERGAN by James T. Farrell.

We also lost Elaine Flinn this week, a grande dame of American mystery writers, if not hugely known. A tough week for arts and letters.

Is this old news to everyone? It still makes me laugh my butt off, having lived long in Missouri and Central Illinois:

You know how the Fruit Battery gets so twisted about Obama's middle name?

How do you suppose they feel about the hundreds of thousands of their Lord and Master's namesakes around the Latin world?

Cripes - I'm going to have to look at that story very closely, Dena. Damn these adventurists anyway!

Meanwhile, just got this from a skeptical Australian friend who lives in Santa Fe, NM:

"Yesterday both McCain and Obama held rallies in Albuquerque. McCain had 1000 supporters show up, Obama only managed to round up 45,000.

"Can you say "landslide"?

Geoff is, as I say, a chronic skeptic, especially in matters of American politics. That he would say anything at all to me is pretty remarkable.

Meanwhile, from today's NYT, comes word Diebold – again! – wants ensure the Republic is only as much a democracy as the plebians can handle:

In the case of Diebold, votes are being dropped when they are transferred from individual machines to the central server in a county's election headquarters.
When an election worker inserts the memory card from a machine into the server, a green arrow is supposed to light up after all of the votes have been uploaded and added to the county's totals. In some cases, the green arrow is wrong, and none of the votes have been added.

Jeebus Crust! Do I need to be a certified EE to be an effective pollwatcher?

Zander, I'm afraid you're right. Very afraid. Distraction has always been an important tool of these bunco steerers and three-card monte artists.

By any chance, is Scraps a member of SFWA? Probably not or the Emergency Fund would have been mentioned already.
