That's a big ass rock.

I'd come to see it. I like rocks.

So far, so good...

Now comes the calm unifying work to put to rest the fears of those worrying about riots and other foolishness.

Fragano at #2:

When I voted early in Gwinnett Co. last Wednesday, they were calling anyone 75 or older to the head of the line to expedite their voting.

Unexpected creatures:

It's always amazing to me how much wildlife lives relatively close to urban areas. A few months ago, I was walking a dog in a neighborhood that's less than a mile from major highways in the suburbs of Atlanta. At one point, something ran across the road in front of us, and up through the neighbor's yard. I had a moment of "Cat? No, too large and the tail's too big" before my brain clicked on the right description -- a fox.

I've seen a pair of deer in the same subdivision, running through people's back yards.

It never gets old.

So far, so good, right?

Good healing thoughts coming your way. Take it easy, get well.

The Doctor watched Romana 2
Regenerate at will.
She kept it up until she knew
A Ward would fit the bill!

An’ it’s who’ll slash ye this time
Who’ll slash ye noo?
The lass who slashed ye last, lad,
She no will slash ye noo.

Herons have started to become rather common here, just north of Atlanta, GA. I don't remember them being in the area when I was young. There was a green heron that used to haunt the inlet stream for the little pond in an apartment complex where I used to walk a dog. He stayed for the summer, and left at the end.

The armadillo line is moving north too. When I was a kid in middle GA, you never saw armadillos there. You do now.

I was amused to learn that those black plastic strips about 16" - 18" tall that they put up on graded hillsides are called "silt fences."

Spinning has a lot of neat terms. On spinning wheels, the section that comprises the flyer, bobbin and support posts is called the mother-of-all.

The support posts for the flyer/bobbin assembly are the maidens (front and rear).

The holder for the bobbins full of spun yarn is the lazy kate.

A niddy-noddy is type of skein winder.

The rod that attaches the treadle to the crank of the wheel is the footman.

Y'all probably know about this already, but I thought this video of Benjamin Bagby reciting Beowulf to the accompaniment of a 6-string lyre was pretty cool:

I've always thought that It's All About the Genes. Keep women subjected, and you (as a male) can be sure that it's YOUR genes that are being passed on, not the milkman's or whoever else might wander by.

Sucks if true, because that pretty much means we'll never get rid of the attitude. It's hardwired.

Seconding what Lila said. Also I'd include the $5k of dental work that I need. Oh, and I'd buy that great wheel (spinning wheel) that I've been drooling over. Then after we got the house painted and the flooring replaced, we'd be golden. :)

Re the elephant:

Holy mother of pearl! My mouth was hanging open. I'm like an awe-struck kid, gaping at a spectacle for the first time.

Thanks for pointing me to the links, PNH!

The Make:Blog is one of my favorite reads of the day. While I don't dabble in pyromania or PVC cannon-type devices, my brother does. I feed him info and store up links for the days I have the time and inclination to work on them.

Good stuff.

I actually thought that "insolence of office" might be more appropriate. Or rather, insolence of office-holder.

I saw a bumper sticker the other day that kinda said it all for me:

God wants spiritual fruits, not religious nuts

By their fruits ye shall know them.
