I love Joss Whedon's female characters because they are strong
enough to take care of themselves, but still human.
Janice, I've seen suggestions from some evolutionary psychologists
that the attitude to which you refer has evolutionary benefit in
the short term. However, in the long run, women do choose to leave
men like that. Additionally, the offspring of men who are more
involved in their children's lives tend to live longer. Assuming
men who are more caring are also going to see their wife as more of
a partner than a servant (which is generally the case), caring
genes may have more of an evolutionary advantage over time. It may
not be as hardwired as you think.
