Meant to write that the world was down one champion, don't think Raskin's worked at Apple for a while.

Apple's down one champion of user interfaces: Jef Raskin died last Saturday.

May your new home be more than good enough to make the move eventually seem worthwhile.

Was out spending the weekend within the walls of the Chautauqua Institution and would have seen artificial fireworks over L. Chautauqua except that the natural electrical flash and bang show led to the cancellation of the chemical one. Did get to here a nice chorus singing "America the Beautiful" as part of the evening sacred song program in the amphitheater.

It's amazing how many possessions can fit into even a small space given time and organizational ability.

Glad to know that you're getting it done with help from friends and making lighter work through several, if not many, hands.

Congratulations on the new place, boo, hiss at the scumminess of your almost-former landlords. I hope that once the move is done you find lots of places in the new neighbourhood that are as nice, fun, and full of tasty food and drink as the places in the old.

I kinda think that if Reagan had thought that a president could break the law with impunity, he'd've stood up during his second term and say that the Iran-Contra dance was his idea and he was running it.

I kinda think the bit about clearing torture was because there are people in the "intelligence community" who don't agree that torture always produces bad information.

I'm with you and with Patrick on the cilantro, and if you keep publishing your recipes I'll be with you on the couch!

Time for you to work out what it is you believe that led to this punishment.

Anyway, the best non-prescription solution I've found to my own para-migraine is an NSAID (aspirin, ibuprofen, etc.) followed an hour or so later with acetaminophen.

Butalbital seems to be the really popular prescription -- fiorinal is the straight-up brand, fioricet is butalbital plus acetaminophen.

Probably all familiar to you, but in case any of it's news, there it is.

Without commenting further on the etymology of the names of women's menstrual items, "tampon" is French for "plug" (noun, see also "tamponner" the verb "to plug or stop up").

The definition from Webster's Unabridged of 1913 does perhaps reflect on etymology:

Tampon \Tam"pon\, n. [F. See Tampion.] (Surg.)
A plug introduced into a natural or artificial cavity of the
body in order to arrest hemorrhage, or for the application of
medicine.

Perhaps it's of interest to note that the second word is more fzctd translated as "fzctd" than as "zotxmtdcph."

It's probably not of great interest, however, as "zotxmtdcph" is by far the more inscrutable-looking version.

At first I was sure that you meant, "putting inscriptions on coffee mugs," but then I looked at the pictures of the mugs and was fairly sure you hadn't just suffered a rare moment of inattentive self-proof-reading.

At the risk of taking all the fun out of beer hunting, a quick Google for (e.g.) "Bundaberg ginger beer" found a number of places from which this beverage can be ordered on-line. sodapopstop.com, in particular, seems to have quite a range of ginger beers, including three kinds of Blenheim (diet out of stock at the moment).

Of course, if it's available locally it's likely to be less expensive.

bundaberg-brew.com.au is the home page for the brewer of Bundaberg ginger beer as well as "Two-Up Horehound" and other dangerous-looking beverages, copies of TV commercials for same, and computer "wallpaper" featuring Bundaberg themes.

`"Bundaberg ginger beer" distributor' produces some information about distribution, which led me to the knowledge that both Bundaberg and Blenheim are distributed in Canada by Clarus Canadian Springs, see www.claruscanadian.com/sodas.html -- they also apparently distribute at least some products to at least some states: Illinois, Ohio, and North Dakota are listed in the Distributors area of their web site, with some notes of local retailers.

It's a nasty illness: very sorry to read that it attacked you again when you thought you had it beaten. I hope that you get appropriate therapies and some rest and make a swift and complete recovery.

I thought the linking of Waco and Jonestown was intriguing, in a barf-inducing way.

Incidentally, the Reg Manning cartoon pointed to by the word "simple" is on a site that doesn't allow access by off-site referrers. The cartoon can be seen by going directly to "http://www.members.tripod.com/frasuer/ADspider_412x507.jpg" (yes, that's "frasuer").

Glad to see people so tactfully distracting Teresa's attention from her nomination for a Koufax Award. Wouldn't want to add to that almost-paralytic shyness.

(P.S., t., the nomination is well-deserved. Huzzah!)

I was checking out recent activity on the main Tufts University web pages this afternoon as part of the follow-up to having started replacing web servers here, and got a chuckle from this page in nielsenhayden.com being tagged as a leading "Interesting" referer in the log file summary reports.

It's a small world, but I wouldn't want to have to back it up.
