I think I did it wrong...I should have changed the perspective.

Because I've been in the midst of yet another re-reading:

Anne Davis turned as the pattern of one of the children vibrated behind her. "Yes, Val Con?"
"What are you playing?" he asked quietly, stepping into the room.
"These are called scales," she said, motioning him closer. "I use them to remind my fingers of where the keys lie."
"But you play every day!" he protested, coming closer to the omnichora.
She laughed. "And you have been in my house every day of the four standards of your life? Yes, I play most days, but not every day." She patted the bench beside her. "Would you like to sit with me while I practice?"

Can I put in a request for a new open thread? Not that this one isn't fascinating, but it's a ways back and a bit long...

When it comes to Belgian beers as brewed by monks, I'm a Lambic fan. I prefer the light fruitiness, but then, I like girly drinks. However, a Chimay (red label) occasionally comes home with me, and it thankfully is available here where all fine beers are sold.

You know you're a medievalist when...you choose your beer based on the monastery depicted on the label - Golliardic Society

I happen to be one who remembers old "Panera" Asiago Bagels and when there was a choice of two soups for the bread bowl* (and it cost 3.95). St. Louis Bread Co. was the big thing when I was growing up, being a chain cross between the bakery, the restaurant, and fast food. I went to school with the founder's children, so many late lunches and dinners we ate in the original location. I miss the comfortableness that left when it became Panera and stopped being that cool local chain.

We always got our bagels bread sliced. And the leftover bagels were sold as day olds for uncountable school club fundraisers. I don't think Panera is doing that part any more...

It's all too common. It's why most employment applications and school applications ask about convictions - and it hits the poor the worst.

LH,

I rarely read the Mefi comments, because the level of commentary is so off-putting. Fun links, yes, but I prefer a more civil discourse. You do that naturally, partially because of the subject matter of your blog, and so I read your commenters extensively. I read comments here. I skip the ones on BB and Mefi, and often when I dip my toes into those waters, I run screaming. It amazes me that even as a discriptivist, you can stand some of the language and phrasing common in the communities of both of those websites. MetaFilter is esp. bad about this and creates a problem for me as I won't wade through the crap to find the content. On the other hand, I don't believe there is any "content" to be had on the original mefi post on this subject.

Alas, no Worldcon for me. New job and possibly a Pennsic run take its place. However, I am in the final mad throws of prep for CONvergence this week/end. 24 GoH, 22 repeating, including my favorite martian scientist.

A move may be coming up in my future. Anyone know what the fannish community in St. Louis is like?

I happen to love this song, and went and bought the Cottar's CD based on hearing it on Pandora.

Thanks for the research, Jim. Need to remember to try this at CONvergence this weekend, though I am much more a fan of Sloe Gin and tonic. (yes, I am a heathen believer in the drinks of sugary sweetness)

We really like this one for pork chops in a creamy champagne sauce: http://www.foodnetwork.com/food/recipes/recipe/0,,FOOD_9936_105234,00.html

Careful, though, because the cream curdles easily if you aren't really, really careful.

I was out working at my CSA yesterday, putting plants in the ground (we can work off part of our share). I also picked up a few veggies to go in the garden that the other half is working on - he gets to be in charge of growing foodstuffs while I do the herb garden. I'm doing a 'raised' bed psedo-medieval herb garden and concentrating on putting in herbs that I use constantly or ones that I use in cooking research*. While he and I are not self-sufficient, we are seriously working on cutting down on the amount we have to buy by canning, cooking, and bartering. It's a challenge, certainly, and I find myself calling one grandmother frequently and wishing the other still was capable of helping (my father's mother taught food preservation at CUNY in the 40s. I should pull out the recipe boxes when I'm home next...I could use some of them, I think.)

However, the USPS is our aid in barter. I have 12 bottles of sekanjabin (mint, raspberry, and blueberry) sitting in my basement, much more mint in the ground, some carboys of mead started, and a website full of jewelry. Shall we start the trading? ;)

*speaking of which, I've got fennel in this year. Suggestions of what to use it in/with would be appreciated.

At the Borders?

A friend was reading Shadow Unit, the great project by Elizabeth Bear, Emma Bull, etc. and found himself muttering "But you can't park on Dodge on that section! and you couldn't see the clocktower from there, there are too many trees in the way even in winter!" He then stopped, agast, having not lived in Omaha for 5 years.

I occastionally spell for one of them, but carpal tunnel means I've got a limited time I can work like that. It's usually about an hour. *grins* I can do other people's hair, but I am a lot better with my own. Possibly because I'm familiar with it's quirks, and I'm blessed with fine hair that has texture and will hold on it's own (I'm a redhead).

Susan-
Some of us never grow out of wanting to play with hair. *grins*

I think part of the reason that I've gotten to be so good with my own is because I practiced a lot - all Mom could do were basic braids and I wanted something fancy. But I only got to braid my own hair until I got to college/SCA, at which point I could play with other people's hair. I'm still not as good with other people.

B.Durbin @ 415

My hair got cut "short" about a month ago. This means that my braid hits between the shoulder blades instead of on my lower back. It has been a very odd feeling.

And cats are just living stuffed animals. At least mine are.

TW @ 425

I *have* to have some of the hormones, unfortunatly. Talked to my doctor the last time I was in - I run short on some things and she can't monitor them as well. The thought of Depo or an IUD is lovely and not for me.

I tried NuvaRing, loved the convenience of it, but when the third month came and I was still weepy, bloated and irritable, I decided it wasn't worth it.

Exactly, but they tell me I shouldn't be on the patch any more, even though they still make it. So now I spend a week even more bitchy and with less patience, since my docs won't let me not be on some heavy form of therepy.

Mary Dell and others -
Something to think about with the Pill v. any of the other hormonal BC methods - college students very rarely have anything like a consistant morning routine which makes an every-day pill more of an issue. Also, if Custodial Parent doesn't think BC is appropriate, the weekly/monthly forms are a whole lot easier to hide.

I'm in a similar situation re my fiance's daughter, however for her, preventing her from having sex too young will be the issue (she's 10). And it's really, really hard not to be the Voice of Authority when he just...isn't and there should be one. Someday we may get to the point that we're more friends, but for now, boundary setting is *hard* and uncomfortable and liable to produce shouting matches. I can't imagine doing it when she is *any* older or with me pregnant. Your friend has my utmost sympathies.

Brief loosing of frustration--

The Hunt Museum in Limerick, IR has one of the most amazing and varied collections that I have ever seen, and I've been in a *lot* of museums. I've been working with their website ever since my visit several years ago, usually frustrated because I can't ever get a response from their webminister or research-question person about dating or size or back pictures or anything. Still - these people were mid-century well known antiques dealers and this is the collection of things they decided they liked too much to sell.

Now, I've come up with an avenue of research that may have a k'zoo paper in it for next year and I know they have a statistically significant sample of what I'm looking at. However, this is the point when they completely rebuild the website, pulling the online collection down. As far as I can tell, they are the *only* museum to even care about the findings and accessories enough to post all 100 or so of their collection online. Or they were!

Grrr. Argh. Research - how did they do it all those years ago? ;)

Well, that's certainly unfortunate decision making on her part all the way around, no matter the stance on reproductive rights. As noted up-thread, teens don't take hypocracy well.

Good luck.

I’m scadian and being dragged into fandom by my fiancé (notice the kicking and screaming?). That sense of belonging is *still* the main reason people join up, as far as I can tell. They understand my extra-long striped scarf in 70s colors...

Susan @ 184

Family can suck, but it sounds like the girl might end up in pretty good shape. If you need someone to process at, I’ll see you on Friday. Mike read me the wrong time off his flight info, so I can do dinner if we have it later…(6:30/7ish)
