I just wanted to pimp/proselytize Umair Haque's latest column, The Generation M Manifesto

It pretty much captures everything I've been feeling lately, and damn I didn't realize how much deep down resentment for mainstream Baby Boomers I've been carrying as a Gen-X who's spent a lot of time living under their shadow...

Posted on entry Voicemail fail ::: May 21, 2009, 01:52 PM:
When Google re-launched GrandCentral as Google Voice they added in a voicemail transcription to email service. It's only about 80% accurate, but that's more than enough for me to get the context. I can honestly say I haven't listened to a voicemail since then.

Of course, those who know me also know that I hardly ever answer my phone, but that's a whole 'nother issue :)

Jim, any chance you could add a Halligan Bar to the Flu Kit list? See, Patti won't let me make a Zombie Apocalypse Kit but she's all for a well stocked Flu Pandemic kit...

I'd recommend pandemicflu.gov as a central government news source in addition to the CDC and WHO. It was originally setup for the avian flu scare, and is being updated for the current swine flu incident/pandemic scare.

As far as the efficacy of this year's flu shots, there isn't a clear answer yet because tests are still in progress at the CDC. This year's vaccine did target H1N1, but the genetic makeup of this is nasty. Besides the swine flu, it incorporates elements from three other genetic lines.

Ginger ale, especially the spicier one's, are a great alternative to club soda.

Actually, my wife just pointed out that our first Hondas (both Odyssey and Pilot) didn't have MonkeyVision, we bought mountable mirrors and installed them. So this innovation is only about three years old, much newer than I originally thought.

A couple of thoughts after (not) sleeping on it last night:

On my Honda Pilot (one of the cars referenced in the story), the passenger airbag is disabled when it detects that there is weight in the seat but not enough to be a mature adult. This is accompanied by a bright indicator light on the dash. So some cars are obviously designed to allow small children and car seats in the front.

One reason I think this never happened to us - both the Pilot and the Odyssey have a flip down mirror used just for observing the back seat. We always use it when the kids are in the car, even today when they're 8 & 12*. When they were babies, we used a second mirror that draped over the back seat and faced the back facing baby seat, so that you could see the baby even if it was facing away.

* On a lighter note, the family has come to refer to this gadget as MonkeyVision.

I'm a terrible empathizer, especially when I'm not actually face-to-face with someone. That story, the writing...I couldn't help but see myself in the tale of the first man with a very powerful emotional connection. I had to stop reading for a bit and pick it back up after collecting myself.

I'm off to hug the girls, but I've bookmarked the article so I can study the craftsmanship more objectively much much later.

PS. Patrick, I think you owe us a unicorn chaser after this.

Bruce Schneier @324

Here's the best I can come up with:

How to Survive an Avalanche
If you find yourself trapped in an avalanche you have almost no chance of outrunning it. Your goal should be to ride on top of the snow if at all possible, on your belly with head toward the bottom of the slope if at all possible. This way you can steer with your hands (what little steering you can do at 80 MPH) and avoid obstacles as they come at you. Every effort should be made to stay on top of the snow.

If you get buried it is going to take a lot of luck and a quick rescue to save your life. As the snow settles after an avalanche it becomes as hard as concrete. You won't be able to move your arms or legs if they are buried. It is critical to fight panic, your air supply could be very limited and your own body warmth will be working against you. As you exhale you slowly melt the snow above you creating an airtight ice shield over your face with tragic consequences. Limit your breathing as best you can and hope that you are found quickly. Remember that struggling only increases how much air you use but use your best judgment, if you have a pocket that gives you a free hand you could work the snow around it to widen the area you can move around.

My wife thinks I've gone overboard. Please tell her there's nothing wrong with this setup and that the rest of you are doing something similar:

1) TV with picture-in-picture to monitor networks.
2) Laptop on table to right of ManChair with major sites, Twitter and IM. Thank goodness for the auto-refresh Firefox plugin
3) Laptop on table to left of ManChair with four video streams, unmuted as needed.
4) iPhone getting text messages, phone calls.

I'm just settling in for the long haul tonight. One thing I noticed - early returns in Georgia show McCain getting more votes than Chambliss. Hopefully this keeps Chambliss under 50%.

Oh man it's getting bad and we have another month of incitement to riot to go. Check out these McCain-Palin rally members saying "Obama is a Terrorist" on camera.

I Hate Being a Nut-Job Thought #12,748: The October Martial Law Surprise scenario never seemed plausible because I figured it'd be targeted at Democrats, but what if you radicalize the Republican conservative base and incite them to riot in places across the nation? I mean if ever there was a group most likely to be manipulated into militant fundamentalist terrorists...sheesh, I really really hate having to think like a nut job.

Quick litmus test. What do you think the respective candidates reactions would be?
