I look at ads placed by vanity presses all the time. Sometimes, a book looks promising, but I would never risk buying it. Maybe some magazine or newspaper ought to have a continuing feature reviewing randomly or quirkily selected vanity press books. Some of them might be good, and many others might well be entertainingly bad.
I'm embarassed to say that for several months after I first heard of Ru Paul, I didn't know he was a man. Considering that I once nearly picked up a transvestite in New Orleans and was nearly picked up by a transvestite in Syracuse, there may be something wrong with my radar.
I've been thinking about entering the private sector and hanging up a shingle. If PZ wants a NY lawyer, this can be my first case.
Note to Disciplinary Committee: This is humor. I'm not soliciting a case.
One of my favorite Columbo episodes was the one about the evil dentist who murdered a patient by putting a dissolving, poisonous filling in one of his teeth. Then, one day, my wife and I saw an episode of McMillan and Wife (which for a time was in a rotation with Columbo) with the same evil dentist plot!
My own wisdom tooth experience wasn't so bad, except that I could feel the tooth cracking (no pain, just awareness) from the pressure of the extractor.
Quite often, I've found that the extensive NYRB essays are a perfectly adequate substitute for the books themselves, at least for areas on the periphery of my interests.
Just what we need. When there's an accident, the damn things will fall out of the sky.
Apparently, it's only a central New York delicacy, but the ideal accompaniment to a clambake (why "bake" when you steam?) is salt potatoes, created when Syracuse saltworks laborers tossed new potatoes into the boiling brine, fished them out, and ate them. Proportions of roughly 4 lbs of new potatoes to 1 lb of salt. Throw salt in water, bring to boil, add potatoes, roughly 20 minutes or until tender. They'll have a visible, but not overbearing, salt crust. Dip in melted butter. Eat.
