I have very vivid memories of receiving the first two books of the Wheel of Time as a Christmas present when I was in Grade 10 or 11. I devoured them in about two days and if my perception of the series has fluctuated over the years during the long wait between books, my memory of the joy I took in falling into those first two books has not.
He had a long vision for that story and I was deeply curious (more so even than with Ms Rowling's series) to see how much of its end would be in its beginning. I am deeply saddened to learn that his illness has overcome him before he could conclude the writing.
I was lucky enough to get a copy of the Eye of the World signed during his last visit to my city and am very glad this morning to have it. His wife was with him that day and my thoughts are with her this afternoon.

Word. The other thing so few people (in person or online) talk about is the book's sexism. The female character does a couple cool things to establish her as a code-breaker, and then stands around being the object of the hero's desires and the reader's stand-in for the alternate history lesson. Where am I? Oh yeah: The Tempest.
And this is supposed to be a book about the sacred feminine? Please.
From a short-time lurker:
Isn't the lure of all self-help writing books that they (the authors) will make it somehow easier for you (the aspiring writer) to tackle a project that's inherently daunting, no matter how you slice it?
I have examined Ms. Wynne Jones's book because so many friends recommended it, but must admit that all others send me scurrying for the hiles.
That said, reading through some of the material on this site has been an enlightening experience.
