I was watching U2's Zoo TV performance of "Mysterious Ways" on Youtube, the one with Morleigh Steinburgh bellydancing, and one of the commenters mentioned how Rachel Brice would have been so superior. So I looked her up, and got into bellydancing. It's one of those things where you really had to be in the right place at the right time, because the bellydancing I'd seen before had been of the Cabaret style, "Las Vegas" aesthetic, which had no appeal for me. But now I've discovered artistic and fantasy bellydance, which uses elements of storytelling.

Now I want to go around telling everyone that Making Light thought I was a spambot until I posted a sestina on Open Thread C.

My mother made great tomato sauce by putting in, along with the onions and garlic, green chilis and a quarter spoonful of panch phoron (Bengali five spice.) It's so good, I've never been able to like the tomato sauce they serve in Vancouver pasta places.

What makes you think I automatically admire anything that wins an Oscar?
Just to clarify matters, I'm not attacking Frank Miller in particular, I'm attacking popular culture in general.

(There's a reason why I don't comment on conservative/libertarian blogs. Let's see if spluttering fury doesn't get the better of me this time.)
Let me give an analogy. If there's a choice between racist acts being depicted as brave and righteous, and racist acts not being depicted at all, I'll go for the latter. The only reason I want rape to depicted at all in art is to make the audience sympathize with the victim. Eroticizing rape makes the audience sympathize with the rapist, not the victim. So I would not count it as a loss at all if depictions of rape were to disappear entirely.

Thank you, LadyVetinari. You were infinitely more polite and coherent than I would have been.

It occurs to me that too many Westerners appear to think that Muslim women live lives similar to that of a Gorean slave. Whereas the lives of middle-class Muslim women, at least, are more likely to resemble Paula's; except it is the men's female relatives who choose the brides based on their conformity to femininity.

I've come up with my own theory as to why all the attractive straight men are gone by the time straight women hit their late twenties. A lot of girls go for the Alpha Male types when they're in their late teens, early twenties, even though they don't have a chance with them. The smart ordinary girls pick up all the nice but shy guys who need a bit of "molding". So by the time women are in their late twenties, all the nice shy guys are taken, and all the Alpha Males are either taken or are revealed to be Alpha Arseholes.

(Dives into the deep end)
Had Nehru been wise enough to allow the Muslim-majority areas of India to separate, there might have been no dreadful four-year civil war following Independence, leading to half a million civilians dead, and India would not have fragmented into half-a-dozen states, with the regional separatist movements having no larger conflict to take advantage of.

Excuse me, ADM, you're acting like everyone here is using this photo as definitive proof that McCain is unpresidential in his behaviour. As far as I can tell from scrolling down this thread, most people are simply having a laugh at him. Oh, we're not allowed to make fun of old white men, is that it?

Look for me in the 1967 Britannica
bindings coming undone at the touch of a fumbling
tween seeking to be not free but queen
reading of operas and ballets in a Dhakaiya living room
Denver the last dinosaur leading to western woods and mountains
where I could never belong
maybe I could be an empress, a French lady
or maybe I could be Charlotte Bronte
words about words
about novels not in my library
looking for a cure for my chronic illness
maybe I could be an empress

I thought I'd post here a poem I've been working on for nine years, in the process splicing together lines from different incomplete poems. So here goes.

The Return of Shyama Mojumdar

Only victory will bring me peace
Only the resting of your head on my chest
Only victory will bring me peace

you turned away from my night-black skin
my mouth like a joba hanging wide open
and I am just a murderess
I am just a poisoned kiss
I am Shyama Mojumdar
and I am back for blood.

I'm a hooker from Babylon
bring your rapture on
I'm more than a mother
in seven layers of muslin
and I am just a feminist
I am just a loud brown bitch

I am not the opposite of what you choose to be
my body the battleground for the clash of civilizations
Huntington's disease of self-fulfilling prophecy
I lit the spark
you fanned the flame
and I am just a terrorist
I am just a little fist

Only victory will bring me peace
Only victory will bring me peace

I am Shyama Mojumdar
never look for me again

We don't mind, Summer Storms, but you'll be facing the Conservatives here (at least until the coming federal election).
