@326 Xopher - From what I can find, the ones that come as separate bars are called caramel rulers: Like these

I now know way more about candy making than I did 15 minutes ago - thanks!

I'm clockwise on the dancer initially, but I can make her change direction by focusing exclusively on the supporting foot, and flipping whether her toes are in front of her leg or in back, if that makes any sense. It took me a few minutes to get her to change at all, and like Xopher, couldn't see how she could be turning any other way at all, until suddenly she was. Very cool.

Does it strike anyone else as a bit of the easy way out, though? I mean, within the text, there are hints, but never any outright contradiction to total heteronormativity. Everyone who officially pairs off does so with opposite-sex partners. There's not even a throwaway reference to some random pair of witches or wizards, accepted or not.

Tossing the "Dumbledore's gay!" information to us at this point seems to me trying to have it both ways - the ones who want to claim it doesn't count because it's not in the books can be happy with the total heterosexuality within the books, and those of us who see the slash get a little bit of "official" backing.

John 706 - that was my mental image for the disemvowelment, too.

If it's a poem being disemvowelled, I think we need a commisioned poem specifically for this - the active space is pretty small, so it's got to be short. I've joined Bruce and Mary in doing mock-ups- see what I'm talking about here.

Xopher @156 - Wow, thanks for that poem link. I know Sweet Honey in the Rock's a cappella setting of it, but the song leaves out the last five lines, which give the parents some credit and also some hope, I think. The truncated version always seemed a little harsh to me, though it was a great song for both orientation weekend and graduation at college, getting parents to let go of their precious kids.

As for Buffy, I've watched on and off - I saw all of seasons 2 and 3 in real time, but only bits and pieces of the rest. I'm too interested in everything to have remained unspoiled, but when I get free time (hah!) I'm planning on going back and watching the whole thing straight through. I'm not much for horror, though (even with levity), so I may have to do it in measured doses.

#86, Jon H. - you might take a look at My Dream App - it's a currently running contest, but some of the already-eliminated apps are interesting, and in many cases were thought of by people without the skills to make them actually happen.
