The fanfic trend right now looks like it's a "/" or one of those
"smush" names if the pairing is romantic/sexual (regardless of
orientation), and "&" or a comma if it's a general story
featuring those characters (non-romantic/sexual relationship).
Now the words are different matter all together. "Slash" is
same-sex pairings, "het" is opposite-sex pairings, and "gen" mean
at least the leads aren't paired off, but most writers usually
throw in "mentions of X/Y" if some other romantic relationship is
referenced. There's also "pre-slash", which means there's subtext
if you chose to read into it. I don't know if there's an equivalent
"pre-het" term; if it exists, I haven't seen it.
