I do like the way Obama escorted the Bushes off the premises. I felt very relieved when that chopper took off.

me @48: I don't mean that the presidential band should should push Warren off the stage. I meant that Obama should give Warren a shove once he's spewing his hate.

Warren: Now, about Gay People, *gollum* let us tell you about teh Gay People...

Obama: *SMACK* *FORCE-PUSH*

Warren: Aaaarrrgh!

Faren Miller #45: I just wish that the presidential band would play "He rode a blazing saddle" instead of "Hail to the Chief" when he steps up to take his oath.

That, and push Rick Warren off the stage.

BC(STM)@655:

I believe it's "tightened up" as in it works a lot better and isn't a complete resource hog. Allegedly, the security prompts are more controlled and less obnoxious. This is all from reports/reviews, and not from experience.

My personal experience of Vista is that it would hibernate well, and then forget what screen and GPU it was using when it woke up. As my windows box is generally woken up from hibernation to play games on, this was not very good. XP, on the other hand, seems to handle this quite well.

(I normally use Linux and OS X at home, with Windows for games, so my windows box is almost exclusively for gaming. For work, I run some Transport Planning apps which are Windows only.)

Window Se7en did suck up all the RAM on my MacBook, but I've only got 3Gigs on here, and I had a whole bunch of other stuff opened as well, so that's not really a fair test. I'll give it a fair go on the windows box (which also has 3Gigs, but doesn't have to share it with OS X) and which has a decent graphics card too.

C. Wingate @ 653: Do you actually need Windows? For most general computing, OS X or Ubuntu (or other Linux) will probably be fine. And may be better unless you need to run Apps which are only there for Windows.

Serge@647 and Fragano@648: Actually, the next version, Windows7 is just a tightened up Vista.

Vista was Windows 6.0, and Windows Se7en[1] is Windows 6.1. (Win 2000 was 5.0, and WinXP is 5.1.)

I've downloaded the beta[2], and it looks like Vista when installing it under VMWare on my MacBook, although I can't say more, because it sucked up all of the available RAM, and I had to abort the install.

There's always all the stupid stuff that most likely would continue under an Obama administration. Why should it be difficult for kinda-sorta left-leaning comedians to make fun of a center-right president?

Not to mention continuing to make fun of the right-wing. I don't think Fox News, Bill O'Reilly, and Rush Limbaugh will all fade away on Wednesday.

Continual mocking of the "Vast Right Wing Conspiracy" will be essential until it becomes like the Sunday Sport (National Enquirer for all y'all Southern Canadians): The kind of news source you read for the salacious content, and then feel relieved that none of it is actually real.

Until your obnoxious relative/workmate feels guilty and slightly stupid about the latest chain email, meme, or flat out lie, that stuff will persist.

#86" There are three categories of people totally unfit to comment on anyone's driving - lorry drivers (truckers), taxi drivers and police. 'You're a good driver, sir.' 'How would you know?'

I have to disagree with the last. British Police Traffic Officers are probably the best trained drivers on the planet.

(disclaimer: I used to have (back when I lived in the UK) a RoSPA silver classification which is basically a Police class 2 license.)

Normal coppers are the usual run of idiots, but the black rats (traffic officers) are damn good. I've been in car on high speed pursuits/deliveries with those guys and they're damn good.

An off-topic question for the military types: when you deploy to other countries as part of a military operation, do you need passports and if so, do they get stamped with entry and exit stamps?

Obviously, an invading force wouldn't need them, but if you were deployed to a base in Europe, would you get stamped in and out?

I want an UnderWired typewriter for my upcoming Wampyre!©™ novel.

It should also come with a heavy duty file for removing serial numbers.

To join in on the off-topic calling card stuff, I've always found the various Avery (and other brands) card templates with perforations to be on very light card stock, and real calling cards should be pretty heavy stock.

Also, the templates never seem to line up properly and I end up wasting one sheet 'calibrating' the printer.

These days, I get nice heavy card in A4 from an art store, a sharp knife and a good ruler, and just cut them up at home.

This gives you the freedom to choose your own shape and size and texture too, if you're feeling artistic.

But, if you can only get rid of Bush, try having an inauguration ceremony for Darth Cheney which is full of loud and unexpected noises:

Swearer: Do you, state your name, swear to uphold and protect the Constitution from

Cheney: wah, steak-yerch-name, wah wah wah.

Swearer: Scandinavian heavy metal bands

GDANG! GDANG!

Cheney: urk!

Swearer: Random attacks by CGI dinosaurs!

CGI Dinosaurs: ROOOAWWWWR!

Cheney: urk!

Swearer: Being beaten about the head by plastic dinosaurs! *bop* bop*

Cheney: urk!

And so on and so forth, until that damn red glow in his eyes dims.

It seems to me like the way 'honour' is used in badducky@113's comment is somewhat like the Chinese concept of 'Face'.

i.e. If someone acts against your brother/cousin/group-member, you will 'lose face' (decrease your social ranking) if you do not react in the group-expected way. You preserve your 'face' (maintain your social ranking) by retaliating in the accepted fashion. You may 'gain face' by an extravagant over-reaction.

As for me, I'm playing with my new computer today. Brand new MacBook with a Windows 2000 virtual machine tucked inside it (which is where I'm writing to you from, right now).

This thing is so beautiful I can hardly stand it. There has to be some sort of sin involved here.

The feeling of guilt will hit you when Steve Jobs unveils something even cooler at MacWorld San Francisco in eight days and 25 minutes.
