On the subject of building large groups from small groups, it might
be interesting to look at Japan, where mainstream politics is
dominated by a fifty year old orthodoxy, but there's a fairly
strong leftish thread coming from a sector that's not primarily
political - pressure groups, particularly environmental ones, which
are widely supported (often by women, who are barely involved in
conventional politics), quite united and also quite powerful, at
least on the issues they're involved in.
