Please forgive me for temporarily damaging the Gibson-ness of the universe. It was 27 years ago, and I was tending bar. We ran out of cocktail onions on a Saturday night, mostly because of my penchant for eating them (they had almost no calories; I was on a diet; they were little salt bombs)...and my boss (a Gibson-drinker) and I finally made an agreement. He would pay me roughly $2.79 less a week, and I could keep on eating all the onions.
Imagine my glee in discovering, when I lived in Madrid some years later, that "cebollitas" were cocktail onions, only better, and could be purchased by the *kilo* (not the little jar) for all of 400 pesetas (then, less than $4).
I don't think they were twins separated at birth, exactly.
The death of such a kind man, and a well-loved writer, is very much a loss for all of us. My deep condolences to those for whom his passing is a personal grief.
We've been sending this same message to students in public relations classes for decades (and long before the Internet was the Internet). For some reason, many PR professionals lose sight of the fact that trying to cover up a public scandal once it's broken is as frustrating (and futile) as a cat trying to cover up a mess on linoleum.
Sing this louder and harder, sister. Even if only a few people learn the lyrics, it'll make a difference.
This is the single most impressive example of the power of bringing public scrutiny on an evil-doer that I have seen. From discovery to citizen journalism to bringing down the plagiarist in under two hours. (You must use this power only for good.)
Thank you very much, abi. We'll very much look forward to seeing your lovely work in person (and *not* drooling on it).
With your permission, I'll copy some of your comments here to pass along to those who might bid for this item in our auction.
Yeah, yeah...typo. Tired typing...gotta start getting more sleep. (First week of classes.)
"Send it by USPS to our PO Box. Any other way, email FordAuction@NESFA.org."
No buts.
Thanks!
As long as it arrives to the NESFA P.O. box by 14 February, or to the address for non-USPS stuff by 15 February, we'll take it.
We ask that items not be sent to us in care of the hotel, since the hotel will charge us to receive them.
Oh, bother. I typoed my own email address. It's correct this time, however.
