Speaking of small Aggie Maggie (whose Flickr set is all kinds of adorable), how is she doing on the not-biting front?

Paula, #40: When I was a sprite, my cat ate my first (and only) hamster; I have not had a rodent pet since. Frederick was a beautiful little cream fellow, and even understanding the nature of things (I was old enough), it was pretty traumatic.

Lee, #37: I have no idea, but wondered if there were actual techniques.

Condolences to Teresa and Patrick, and Dave.

And welcome to Aggie Maggie, who is very cute despite her bloodthirstiness. (How does one teach a hamster not to bite?)

I am a latecomer to Buffy, and in fact am still watching the series for the first time on DVD. I'm in Season 5. And speaking of Joss Whedon, have we had a Dollhouse thread here yet? I don't recall seeing one.

From the MANITOBA HERALD, Canada

The flood of American liberals sneaking across the border into Canada has intensified in the past week, sparking calls for increased patrols to stop the illegal immigration. The possibility of a McCain/Palin election is prompting the exodus among left-leaning citizens who fear they’ll soon be required to hunt, pray, and agree with Bill O’Reilly.

Canadian border farmers say it’s not uncommon to see dozens of sociology professors, animal rights activists and Unitarians crossing their fields at night. “I went out to milk the cows the other day, and there was a Hollywood producer huddled in the barn,†said Manitoba farmer Red Greenfield, whose acreage borders North Dakota. The producer was cold, exhausted and hungry. “He asked me if I could spare a latte and some free-range chicken.â€

In an effort to stop the illegal aliens, Greenfield erected higher fences, but the liberals scaled them. So he tried installing speakers that blare Rush Limbaugh across the fields. “Not real effective,†he said. “The liberals still got through, and Rush annoyed the cows so much they wouldn’t give milk.â€

Officials are particularly concerned about smugglers who meet liberals near the Canadian border, pack them into Volvo station wagons, drive them across the border and leave them to fend for themselves. “A lot of these people are not prepared for rugged conditions,†an Ontario border patrolman said. “I found one carload without a drop of drinking water. They did have a nice little Napa Valley cabernet, though.â€

When liberals are caught, they’re sent back across the border, often wailing loudly that they fear retribution from conservatives. Rumors have been circulating about the McCain administration establishing re-education camps in which liberals will be forced to shoot wolves from airplanes, deny evolution, and act out drills preparing them for the Rapture.

In recent days, liberals have turned to sometimes-ingenious ways of crossing the border. Some have taken to posing as senior citizens on bus trips to buy cheap Canadian prescription drugs. After catching a half-dozen young vegans disguised in powdered wigs, Canadian immigration authorities began stopping buses and quizzing the supposed senior-citizen passengers on Perry Como and Rosemary Clooney hits to prove they were alive in the ’50s. “If they can’t identify the accordion player on The Lawrence Welk Show, we get suspicious about their age,†an official said.

Canadian citizens have complained that the illegal immigrants are creating an organic-broccoli shortage and renting all the good Susan Sarandon movies. “I feel sorry for American liberals, but the Canadian economy just can’t support them,†an Ottawa resident said. “How many art history and English majors does one country need?â€

What happens to a plum preferred?

Does it linger
sweet and juicy overnight?
Or keep its stony core
from the light?
Does it smell like sugared bliss?
Or lead to breakfast fancies--
in which nothing's amiss?

Maybe it just waits
through the chilly eve.

Or are you naive?

A platinum beer brewing heiress,
With millions to ease all her pain.
Poor Cindy's a suffering housewife,
But something has addled her brain.

But something has addled her brain, dear,
But something has addled her brain;
She thinks that the facts, they are dirty -
Oh, something has addled her brain.

Her husband has crawled through the gutter
And brought out the worst he could find.
But Cindy won't see - do you reckon
That something's gone wrong in her mind?

That something's gone wrong in her mind, dear,
That something's gone wrong in her mind;
She's bought one too many deceptions,
And something's gone wrong in her mind.

The press, once such flattering toadies,
Have stopped writing shameless hurrahs.
Now Cindy can't stand those reporters
Exposing John's manifold flaws.

Exposing John's manifold flaws, dear,
Exposing John's manifold flaws;
She can't have those ungrateful wretches
Exposing such manifold flaws.

So unpleasant facts are discarded,
And history's batted aside.
That one over there is the slimer,
The one that the press should deride.

The one that the press should deride, dear,
The one that the press should deride;
Poor Cindy has said up is down, and
That's something the press should deride.

Now pity the poor wealthy heiress,
And pity her poor addled brain,
And pity the one who must suffer
The temper of John S. McCain.

The temper of John S. McCain, dear,
The temper of John S. McCain;
He'll be such a jerk when he loses
That Cindy will lose it again.

Teresa, congrats on getting sprung. A blessing for you:

May you desire to be healed.

May what is wounded in your life be restored to good health.

May you be receptive to the ways in which healing needs to happen.

May you take good care of yourself.

May you extend compassion to all that hurts within your body, mind, and spirit.

May you be patient with the time it takes to heal.

May you be aware of the wonders of your body, mind, and spirit and their amazing capacity to heal.

May the skills of all those who are caring for you be used to the best of their ability in returning you to good health.

May you be open to receive from those who extend kindness, care and compassion to you.

May you rest peacefully under the sheltering wings of divine love, trusting in God's gracious presence.

May you find little moments of beauty and joy to sustain you.

May you keep hope in your heart.

Be well.

Still heavy smoke cover in Davis and environs. We haven't seen the sun since, what, Wednesday? Current forecasts are that the smoke won't begin to clear until Monday, and there are more thunderstorms with lightning but little moisture headed for the Sierras this weekend.

Congratulations to all the happy couples! I really love that photo of George and Brad. There will be a lot of us in Cali working to defeat the marriage amendment (and the latest iteration of the parental notification law), so I'm hopeful it / they won't pass.

Bruce Cohen @52: Having spent several years in fundamentalist churches, I think there's a great deal of truth in this. There's a verse in Hebrews, much quoted by fundamentalists, that (essentially) equates faith with certainty. Lack of certainty is therefore lack of faith, and a grievous sin to be avoided at all cost. Add in the fact that they think gay sex is icky, and you have a gut-level response that they'll twist themselves into all sorts of rhetorical and logical knots trying to justify, as all y'all have so ably explored upthread.

I'd heard of the song, and had heard it, or parts of it, at least
once (thanks for the YouTube, Teresa), but never would have gotten it.
