I am a hamster. Something horrible happened to me the other night. A giant, furless paw came down from the sky and took the magic stone from my roof.
But then something wonderful happened. A soft, furless paw picked me up. It stroked me and made funny, but comforting sounds. I don't remember my mother--maybe she was like this? The paw fed me delicious food, then tucked me in again.
Was I dreaming or awake? I don't know. It's strange to be a hamster in this world.
#3 You got the "liberated wommin". I commuted to Herald Square and got the "Where it's at! I got two turntables and a microphone" man--except it was "brimstone, bibles and a microphone."
And there was the pudgy little guy who, during rush hour evenings, strode furiously against the crowd heading for the subway. He wore normal office-type clothes, and a blonde man-wig and lots of white concealer under his eyes. He would shout as he struggled along, one leg off the curb, one on: "Get out of my f*ing way! It's a two way sidewalk, motherf*rs!" No one ever raised an eyebrow (or made room for him).
This reminds me of a NY Post (I think) headline back in the 80s. I was just thinking of it the other day. It went "Reagan to New York City: Drop dead." Reagan wouldn't use fed funds to bail out NYC from a fiscal crisis. Is there a lineage of "Drop dead" headlines?
And... I can sympathize with lit reviewers not being qualified to judge science books, but surely they could get on the blower and call some eminent scientists for suggestions? Some of their own science writers? They could probably even find some books that have integrity but are interesting and well-written (and simple) enough for science-dummies like me to appreciate.
# 150 Serge, they brought stuff from Alexandria (VA), which I suspect is more than a quick trip from your fave. (I'm in Richmond VA.) Strangely, none of us are big dessert makers, even if we're pigs for sweets.

We had parts of our family over at our house. Store-bought deserts, alas, but my mom's oyster stuffing, and I roasted a brined turkey. It was nice and moist, but maybe not worth the trouble and near back collapse. (The weight: turkey + 4 gallons or so of liquid.)
My nephew is a scifi writer (college senior) and I encouraged him to try out for VP. And/or he's thinking of going to grad school. I'm so proud of him!
PS Even though I know only a few of you, and those few only from the workshop, a good, family feeling takes hold of me reading this post and all the comments. Hope the rest of your weekend is pleasantly spent!
We need more than a word! We need protection. The patent-pending Clip-on (or velcro-fastened?) Belt Loop Anti-Strike-Plate Device. Or maybe a Pesky Strike Plate Bumper. No need to employ your Eye-Shank-Point device on belt loops ever again!
Bruce, eggplant's the "poor man's mushroom." After you cut it, salt it thoroughly, let it sit in a drainer, rinse, then cook it real, real well. (The salting is to leach out the bitterness that can lurk within.)
