michelel @ 9: I always try to tell them that I'd much rather they tell me about the bug when I can still fix it than have to apologize to my mom when she runs the software she paid for and it breaks.
You can quantify how much money it costs to fix a defect at every single stage of the development process, and the cost-per-defect doesn't exactly go down as you get to the later stages. It really does amaze me that so many people don't grasp this.
It kills me to go to a 'Martini Bar' place and have the bartender be confused by any order for something that isn't either a sweet syrupy fruity thing or a simple liquor+soda.
It's bad enough that nobody has cocktail onions, but is asking for an actual martini at a martini bar really so weird?
Whoops, two minutes too slow -- Megan@155 said what I wanted to say much more concisely.
Scalzi@150: While I agree that it's good that there's a response now, I also have to agree with the first comment in the LJ post about it, concerning the "this list was flawed and the results were not checked" bit:
Whenever I teach engineers to write, I say "The passive voice hides the agent, the person or thing that performs the action."
The list didn't just make itself, and it didn't just fail to check itself.
It's good that Capobianco recognizes that there was a problem, but the whole thing ends up coming off a bit like he's saying "Y'know, mistakes were made. These things happen. Won't happen again, we promise, so don't worry about it."
Nothing about "we're looking into how we made this mistake", or "we're looking into how to make sure we don't do this again".
It's all wrapped up a little too neatly for my tastes.
Josh, I definitely believe there's a lot of homophobia in the way police officers conduct cruising busts, but at the same time I think I'm a lot happier if nobody ogles me through the crack in a restroom stall, gay or straight.
I'm pretty okay with Craig getting nailed for this. Maybe it's "less aggressive" than what people do in bars, but if I'm in a bar I'm expecting people to hit on me. The same isn't true if I'm sitting in a stall with my pants around my ankles.
