And, as a reward, BoA (along with all the others) is going to get a *huge* tax break in the upcoming "stimulus" bill, in the form of increased loss carry forwards.

Because the umpteen billion dollars we've given them already has made such a dramatic change in the economy, of course.

I don't get flu shots until later in the season, because I'm low risk, less likely to be seriously harmed by most influenza viruses* and there are often supply constraints. The people at greater risk -- elderly, health care providers, etc. -- need to get first crack at it.

**Yes, I know the Spanish Flu pandemic hit the young and healthy unusually hard

Land kills hurricanes, from friction with the landscape and because land isn't as warm as tropical water, especially when it cools down at night.

The real killer isn't friction, it's lack of moisture. Tropical Cyclones are heat pumps -- very humid air is lifted up and condenses. The Heat of Condensation (ΔvH) of water is very high -- it takes a great deal of energy turn boiling water into steam -- and when you reverse it, a great deal of heat is pulled into the water, which then falls. Thunderstorms work the same way, but the rain rapidly cools the ground, shutting off the pump that lofts that moisture. (This is why storms than don't move fade quickly, storms that move fast can last for hours.) Over the ocean, even several inches of rain won't significantly cool the ocean waters, so the storm can grow without cutting off the moisture and heat it needs to grow. Warm waters have lots of both -- even 100F rain soaked ground has a fraction of the heat and moisture available than the Gulf of Mexico does in late summer.
Posted on entry If you use Gmail, read this ::: August 25, 2008, 03:38 PM:
if I use Gmail and hundreds of his other correspondents use Gmail, in effect he’s using Gmail too.

Yes. And even if your send is somewhat secure, when the recipient replies-to-all and fails to trim the response, all your effort has gone to naught. (As a bonus, they will reply on top as well.)

The correct answer: Assuming that any email you send is between you, the recipient, and anyone with access to Google Search.

Even if you "encrypt" it -- because it's way too easy for someone to forward it without encryption (and never mind the number of bad crypto implementations.)

The reason that HTTPS is important with Google is the auth cookie, which, if the bad guy sniffs, will let them *act* as you. Screw reading your email, how much damage can I do if I can send email that is indistinguishable from your normally sent email?

Can someone cite some cases where passwords/credit card numbers have been stolen strictly by network sniffing?

It has happened. It doesn't get reported because the number of thefts is low -- you get a couple at a time, not thousands, and if the bad guy is smart, he sells the info to someone else, which makes it much harder to find the bad guy.

I assume that all connections are being sniffed, because it's just safer to make that assumption. For one thing, most of the wireless networks out there *are not mine*, and the provider gets to do what they want with the bits they pass.

I was convinced earlier that my first choice, Tim Kaine, was a terrible idea when it was pointed out to me that "Obama-Kaine" is phonetically too similar to "Oh Boy McCain." So "Obama-Biden" dodges that bullet.

I prefer the Blue (Grand Réserve) over the Red, but they're all good.

Just picked up a bottle of Delerium Tremens (scroll down.) There are pink elephants on the label.

Belgian beers are amazing things. You can divide the world into two -- Belgium and Everybody Else. They have a roughly equal number of beer styles.

The important distinction is whether or not it is a for-profit business, and I am pretty sure that it is.

How so? How does it being for profit change what they might do? Unless they're a publicly held company *and* you are a stockholder, in which case, you can bring this issue to the board of directors.

Hint: There are lots of reasons to form a company. By default, any company so formed is a for-profit company. What "Not For Profit" means is "Not *taxed* as a profit making company." That's it. Because the Feds are the Feds, you have to file a bunch of paperwork to justify why your company should not be taxed on your income. Most companies don't qualify, but that doesn't mean they're not a good ideal to form -- even if the company never books a dime in true profit.

Why is the fact that Boing Boing is a *taxable entity* change anything? I'm a taxable entity. Most posters here are. Mr Scalzi certainly is -- what is the magic state change on his weblogs if he should have Scalzi LLC or ScalziCo be the taxable entity rather than J. Scalzi, Esq.? Hint -- if he sells pictures of bacon taped to a cat, and pockets the money, does it matter *one bit* if the shipping address is ScalizCo or J. Scalzi, Esq.?

Again: Why does *paying taxes* and *making money* make Boing Boing, LLC different than it's members (who also, presumably, pay taxes and make money.)

As a matter of fact, I want to know. Are you making money? If so, who are you to complain! I want to see your financial records for the last decade, and, if in fact, you haven't made any money, and aren't paying taxes, then I'm willing to allow you to assert that the mere act of *not filing for non-profit status* means that the editors of Boing Boing cannot, in fact, do whatever the fuck they want to With Their Own Blog.

What about their readers? They don't owe them any accountability?

In fact, not one bit. Now, you might think that accountability might help them *keep* them as readers, and that this would be a good thing.

I'd probably agree with you.

But "owe?" No. There's no debt incurred. There's no cost to read the site, there's no obligation -- to reader, or to author -- incurred by doing so.

Unless you have a contract or other legal note of obligation, the editors of "Boing Boing" owe you nothing. And a large part of this whole episode is people trying to assert debts that simply do not exist.

Or, quite simply: It's just a weblog.

Thanks to those who pointed out that BB isn't a personal site, it's a for-profit corporation

Changes nothing. If it was a publicly held for-profit corporation, then they would have obligations to the shareholders. A private for-profit corporation has obligations *only* to the owners, and those who it holds legal contracts and such with.

Indeed, if this bothers you, you can stop reading, and *actually hurt their bottom line."

The guitar in the bed photo has no strings on it.

That's because the "guitars" in the photo are Rock Band/Guitar Hero controllers, not guitars. Which makes me wonder about the "guns."

Ahh, DIA, where the bags are MIA.

I loved this system. The belts ran too fast, so when you'd hit a curve, ZING, the bag would fly off. So, they slowed down the belts...but only in the curves.

So, Bag #1 slows down -- and the bag right behind whips in at full speed and BAM, slams that first bag into a wall like a well struck pool break. It then falls over on the slow belt, allowing bag #3 to make a competitive vault over it for the gold.

End result. Bag #2 would make it through the curve, but dented from two impacts. #1 and #3 hit the wall at different heights.

The answer? Rip the belts out and run carts.

Can you expand on this? Has the site been crashing on people?

Yes, and no. This is a traditional warning -- that waiting to the last minute assuming that the computer will be there may result in you *not* getting to nominate, should the computer not, in fact, be online. If it does die at 11PM PST, and not come back until after Midnight, well, online nominations will be closed.

The direct correlation is don't wait until 5PM to mail your nominations, because if the Post Office doesn't pick them up that day, your ballot won't count.

Besides, that's a beastly hour to be nominating. Wouldn't you rather have the sun shining as you fill out the form?

IOW, just because you can wait until 11PM PST, don't. Get it done now, and you won't have to worry. Better, should the server in fact be down tonight, you'll have another chance. We want you to nominate, we really do.

I was amused when the Hugo Administrator posted this, because I've seen that exact same warning since my undergraduate days. If you're betting on the mainframe being online the night before the assignment is due, you might just lose.

Posted on entry Why Does Nader Hate America? ::: February 24, 2008, 06:26 PM:
The problem isn't Nader.

The problem is Nader *voters*.

How can one reason with someone who accepted the following statement as true: "There's no difference between Gore and Bush?" How can you reason with someone who's going to posit that there's no difference between McCain and Obama?

The only ideas I have for reasoning with them are illegal, and rightfully so.
