Ambar@165: Haven't read anything of Obama's speechwriters, but one of the topics buzzing about Hollywood is that one of them's named Jon Favreau. NYT has a profile. Although I'm told that all the major speeches, Obama writes himself.

Love and wishes for a speedy recovery for Teresa! And nthing all the reminders to Patrick to take care of himself.

Speaking of book thefts, this came out recently and made me boggle--US v. Allen. The facts read like a heist/comedy flick. Yes, the combination.

Jason Shiga, when he's not working on comics, is actually a librarian. He's also rather sweet in person, and quite the geek. He makes a lot of local appearances in the company of Derek Kirk Kim and Gene Yang.

[No, I don't stalk them--why do you ask?]
Posted on entry Birth announcement ::: February 05, 2008, 03:23 AM:
Victoria @98: I go by Vicky. No real choice-my only explanation is that my parents didn't understand the idea of nicknames yet (they'd only been in the US for a year or so) because my sister, born two years later, got the full name and then addressed within the family by the nick.

Also, I managed to get saddled with an androgynous Chinese name, thanks to a fortune-teller consultation. My grandfather insisted that all of his grandchildren, like all of his children, had the same character for a middle name.

And while I'm delurked! I think watching you all and drinking in the air here has made me want to name my not-yet-anytime-soon daughter Villanelle. She could go by Anne, Elle, or when she hits her sexy siren phase, Villain.

Ballad by Deadmouse for those of you with a gothic/surreal/horror bent. Currently on hiatus, though, but with a few completed episodes.

[Yay, I have something to contribute! (Although every time I post here it feels like approaching the big people table...lots of trepidation)]

TNH @47--unlurking momentarily to say that if you haven't found the book of the paper clock you can assemble yourself, I've got it somewhere in a pile of "nifty things picked up at garage sales" at my parents' place. My sister and I, as children, could never bring ourselves to cut it up, so it's still whole. If people would like, I can look for it when I head home for the holidays and at least post the ISBN for easier locating.

I go to a school that was shut down for the day after school admin consulted with the police and the FBI over a message posted to a discussion board. I feel sick to my stomach.
Posted on entry Mike Ford: Occasional Works (Pt. Seven) ::: March 08, 2007, 04:19 AM:
Dave @ 11--Thank you for posting the piece and for linking the previous "Occasional Works" entries. And as always, thank you, Mr. MacDonald, for putting it all together.

To the dinoslash commenters: I started reading the comments around then, and it never fails to elicit a "hee!" when it comes up.

(Previously, the idea of reading three figures worth of comments was too daunting...but now I've lurked on the thread that hit four figs, so....)

I like Viable too. It conjures up images of test tubes and growing things, whereas Realistic Paradise is boring and Attainable Paradise sounds like manager-speak. Viable makes me think, "ok, well, it's possible, but not exactly guaranteed...."

And Possible Paradise is just doofy.
