Re the comments on Bush's enthusiasm for the death penalty.
The New York Times op ed today has a story from an advisor to the
Coalition Provisional Authority on rebuilding the justice system.
This paragraph struck me:
"Perhaps the most notable example was the long delay in replacing
Saddam Hussein's laws with the comparatively progressive Iraqi
Penal Code of 1969. Despite agreement among the coalition members
in April that this was the best option, the change did not occur
until last month. The delay, we were told, came because America's
coalition allies wanted the death penalty provisions in the code
suspended, while Washington was steadfast in its insistence,
apparently, that what's good for Texas must be good for Iraq."
Clinton's insuring that a poor retarded kid get the chair was
dastardly, and one of the reasons I voted against the guy in 1996;
Bush's enthusiasm for the death penalty is drearily pervasive
throughout his political career. It won't be one of the reasons I
vote against him next year -- there are so many others, it will be
lost in the shuffle.
