Speaking of phone scams, I got a blocked call from someone claiming to be from the collection unit of a charge card I have, looking for a Julia with my last name. He got real huffy and asked for all sorts of information which I refused to hand over. I told him I thought it was odd that I hadn't had a written notice in accordance with the law, and if he wanted to contact me he could do it in writing. He decided I wasn't the sucker, I mean, Julia, he was looking for. But I kept him busy for a few minutes. ;-)
I'm with Clifton Royston @#4. Probably an ID theft ruse. They chose the wrong house to call, didn't they?
Drat. There went another keyboard.
A while back we made the decision to patronize local restaurants as often as possible. Better food, better service, and the money stays here.
There was a case in Dallas this weekend. The car was unlocked, amazingly, and someone was able to rescue the child. The baby had only been in the car for half an hour, but it was over 80 here yesterday, so this story could have had a far worse ending.
G. Jules @13: I'll bet the debt isn't 25 years old. I've filled out plenty of applications that ask for the previous residence or two, and my credit report shows where I lived before now. That information wouldn't be difficult for a creditor to dig up. It's a lead. But someone must be really desperate (or hoping for a huge commission) to go digging that far back.
Lee @5, I still get collectors calling for someone who lived in this house before we bought it. We've been here 25 years. The callers are always friendly (they obviously know they're grasping at straws), but they try to find out if we know where to find the guy. I don't know, and I don't care.
I can only guess that he must owe enough money to make it worth their while.
I'm so glad my mom is good about paying her credit card bills! So was my husband's mom.
I had a nasty run-in with a BofA collector who insisted I was someone with a similar name who was three months behind on their credit card payments. He got hold of the wrong person - in more ways than one. I kept him busy for a good 20 minutes, though! ;-)
Scratch what I said in @126. The big city daily just instituted a new comments system, and it has become overrun with idiotic postings.
Makes me weep.
I just passed this info along so to some folks I know who are up there in hopes they can give you guys a hand.
What? You mean Wagner did not write Kill the Wabbit?
Can't trust anything these days.
Oops. Messed up that bold tag. That's what happens when the keyboard is full of coffee.
I did some time in Christian radio (long story. Interesting few years, though) and can tell you that Huckabee's scheme isn't new. I can also tell you that there are a number of Christians who don't support that idea. They see just one flaw with that plan: God happens to offer free choice.
Forcing someone to follow a religious edict does not make that person a follower of (insert any particular religion here).
@C.E. Petit #53: "...testifying for Christ." Coffee, meet keyboard.
Thanks, Seth. I thought a takedown notice had to be in writing.
It looks like pulling the site was within the hosting company's Terms of Service, which states that they can suspend a site for any reason they choose. I'm not saying that it was the right thing to do, however.
I am stunned. There are other words, but they are not fit to use here.
Perhaps this shows why I'm not a lawyer, but I thought that a DMCA takedown notice had to be in writing. Perhaps it was, but a phone call shouldn't trigger a takedown. Also, it doesn't take an advanced degree to know that spammers get your e-mail address by various means. Heck, when I changed ISP's last month I was getting spam at my freshly-minted address before the day was out.
I'd like to add my offer of technical help, and plan to blog about this.
Check out the Stags Head Pub - it's been standing for over 300 years and hasn't had a proper renovation since the Victorian era. The Guinness is good, and the bangers and mash are sublime. Best bangers I've ever had. Ever.
