Vaccinations are a gamble: Will the reduced chance of a future disease outweigh the chance of complications now? Everyone has to make the choice for themselves. No medical procedure - and that includes vaccination - should be required by law. Period. End of sentence.

One should choose one's vaccinations carefully, because there are some which cause serious side effects in some people. We don't hand out rabies vaccines or smallpox vaccines unless there's a reason to - and that should be the case with childhood diseases as well.

This is a principle reason that I signed up to be a poll worker (official title: election inspector). I want to know that at least one precinct is doing the job correctly. It's a 16-hour day, with only minor breaks for food and bathroom, but I think it's an important thing to do.

I once was convinced that I was seeing a UFO. It was coming up fast, barely above the treeline, in the middle of nowhere in rural Michigan. I fumbled my camera out, ready to start taking *lots* of pictures ... when I noticed the distinctive five-pointed star of the US Air Force painted on the side. Not a UFO, just some test plane ...sigh... It's always weather balloons, or experimental aircraft, or mountaintop beacons, isn't it? :-)
