OK, that's another book for the list. Sounds pretty good, too.

Speaking as somebody who was taken to the ER because of dehydration (following the norovirus in Madison this past Memorial Day, aka the WisCholera), I can testify to the extreme ungoodness of dehydration. (Mind, I probably wouldn't have gotten so sick if the norovirus hadn't heterodyned with the Crohn's disease. Oy.) They're absolutely right about the irritability and lethargy, plus disorientation, though that might have been the 102.9 fever. The ER intake people took one look at me, said, "Riiight," and pretty much got us in there right away and started pushing fluids and potassium. (The potassium stuff is connected to the arrythmia stuff, right, Jim? Us recovering anorexic types need to steer clear of that kind of nonsense.) They gave me two big cups of that orange stuff that does not taste at all like it looks like it should, and two bags o' fluids, and stuff started getting better pretty darned fast.

Only took me a little over 24 hours from onset of the norovirus to get that sick, though.

In case I didn't say it before, thank you, Patrick, for poking people to check in on me. And Katie is a Hero of the Revolution for hauling my butt in to the ER.

If it had been cholera, I probably wouldn't be here. Scary stuff, cholera.

Um, 151's quote was from Josh in 130. Sorry for leaving out that attribution.

All of which is to say: I think this is about the least flattering way for such stuff to be exposed to folks who are (as it seems a lot of ML regulars are) actually a bit closer than average in however loose a sense to the BB crew, but a whole lot of the BB/Cory riffing in that thread, and elsewhere on mefi, is exactly that: riffing, people on the site that they hang out on just jawing while something interesting unfolds. I'm sure there are a few folks in there who are feeling genuine anger or upset at BB, but by that token there's also a lot of us having, and expressing, substantial but far-from-angry reactions to all this.

That's an important point to remember. It also reminds me that there's sometimes this belief people have that if someone qualifies to them as a public figure, they can say anything they like about them because somehow that person is not real, and stuff said about them is somehow merely entertainment or something.

I remember that after Jim Rigney died, I was reading some condolences and remembrances that various people had written, because sometimes it feels good to have company missing somebody, if that makes any sense. I ran across one completely poisonous and apparently offhand screed of such casual meanness that I had to go sit somewhere and shake for a while, just to let my reaction go by.

One person's life is another person's free entertainment, to people like that. I don't much care to be around that, and I try to avoid doing it myself.

Not sure this is really germane to the whole BB thing, but it's what the comments raise in my mind just now, so there ya go.

OK, that is truly cool.

Love the Nellis bit. Also, is the Amsterdam dancing happening in front of that canal that everybody takes photos of? (Patrick knows the one I mean, because he took a photo of it on his visit there.)

Happy New Year!

Resolutions? Ummmm....

OK. Go through the stack of manuscripts and submit some things. Get the attic impedimentia cleared out or organized, whichever's appropriate to the kipple in question. Have more house guests. Take at least one rockhounding trip. Finish novel, dang it. Catch up on correspondence, and stay in better touch with people. Take that trip to the Black Hills with Juan. Plan trips back to Skagen and Robin Hood's Bay. Start organizing things for next Great North American Railroad Expotition. Don't put off health care stuff.

There. That's more than enough resolution-making for one year. Tired now; think I'll go see if there's Hoppin' John and beans & rice yet, because something smells delicious out there.

Just nodding in here late to say that Squat, the Parking Goddess, has the following invocation, at least in these parts:

"Squat, find for us a parking place and I will send you two nuns."

Once parking place is procured, then say:

"Thanks, Squat; your nuns are in the mail!"

Carry on.

#269 Jon, which Whisperado songs were partially inspired by BtVS?

(Also, hi!)
