I predate car seats. As an infant, my dad made a sudden stop when a kid ran in front of the car and I flew out of my mother's arms into the windshield. I grew up always hearing, this is where you cracked the windshield every time we passed the spot.
Safety devices so often solve a huge problem, only to create new and smaller ones.
I would recommend the chat he did, it really brings more depth to the story and people's motivations.
Bob Devny @ 68: And the Wang family also donated the money to renovate the Metropolitan Theater, a Boston movie palace turned arts theater. It thus became the Wang Center, source of much giggling and snickering.
It is now the Citi Performing Arts Center, but the best (mis)usage of the old name happened back in the 90s when providing recorded information over the telephone was how everyone was going to get rich. There was a number to call for show times. You dialed, pressed the pound key and then a theater name. Whoever wrote the radio ads had a clean enough mind to end them with a hearty:
"Remember, for the best in Boston entertainment - Pound Wang!"
The women-focused sex toy shop Grand Opening had the slogan "toys for your box." (It's now closed... cue more jokes.)
On somewhat the same track, but not sexual, the MBTA has come up with the slogan "Driven by Customer Service," printed on the jackets worn by the workers in the stations. This supposed to be reassuring?
You left out the one I've frequently made: A savory pie for the first day of winter. It works nicely with ground turkey mixed with Penzey's breakfast sausage seasoning. (Although I've been tempted to buy the venison sausage seasoning just for this dish.)
Watching WBZ in Boston. They are showing Sununu conceding. How sick is everyone of Sununu? On the vote totals graphic they had two pictures of Shaheen!
The marijuana as misdemeanor and dog racing bans appear to have passed.
I'm in Tip O'Neill's old district and old enough to have voted for him. His only challenger on the ballot was from the Communist Party.
How sad. I grew up in Alexandria. We used to end late nights out when we didn't want to go home yet by going to the monuments and just hanging out. Midnight was a popular time, because the lights switched from evening mode (the spectacular gorgeousness you see in touristy pictures) to overnight mode (still pretty, but more subdued). In the summer this happened at about midnight. When thrown, the switches underneath the monument sounded a giant boom, boom, boom. We had great fun watching the tourists jump, gasp, clutch each other, and so on. The Lincoln Memorial was the best. Good clean fun. Very steampunk. Don't remember too much hassling from the cops. This has all gotten way to far out of hand.
I think that the general rule for conspiracy theorists applies here. Once someone is in that mindset, they might be made to realize that some individual piece of their facts or reasoning is incorrect. However, you will never be able to get them to understand that nobody cares. That the government and/or the terrorists aren't out to get them because... they just aren't attractive targets. And there aren't that many terrorists.
I had a sudden image of a Pride and Prejudice where Lizzie disguises herself as a man, goes in search of Lydia and Wickham, only end up in a metal bikini chained to Jabba the Hut. And Darcy comes to save her.
It will be interesting to see who makes it through the complete Jane Austen this winter and spring on Masterpiece Theater. Friends who are gushing over it, that is.
