KeithS @ 840: I recall hearing an interview done when he was 63. He was already quite sick of having to discuss his 64th birthday, which was still months away, every single time he talked to someone.
Serge @ 838: It's his birthday, but he's 67 today. He was born in 1942.
Philip José Farmer passed away peacefully in his sleep this morning.

I think this sense of belonging is why I'm so adamant that I must bake some typical holiday dessert for my family's Christmas functions. My husband has a gluten intolerance, and I feel a deep need to make sure that he is able to eat something throughout the meal with the rest of the family. There's plenty he can eat during the main course, but pretty much every family-traditional dessert contains gluten.
My grandmothers experience the same reaction with him. They'd be troubled when he'd visit and they didn't have anything to offer him to eat. Now I'll try to take something to Granny's when we visit, since she doesn't do much baking any more (she'll still feel bad that she didn't have anything for him, but will be happy that he's eating). Grandma adapted a couple of recipes for him: she'll bake a batch (of cupcakes, for example), put them into the freezer, then take a few out to defrost in the microwave when he comes over. A new batch gets made when the prior batch runs out.
I've been in bad shape for the past month, and I wasn't feeling up to making anything in time for a family gathering last weekend. He took some gluten-free cookies he bought, but it just doesn't feel the same to me. He shrugs it off as unimportant. Perhaps I should have him read this post and the comments.
R.M. Koske @ 232: My guess is that they shut down early for an employee holiday gathering, allowing everyone to attend rather than having some stuck at work while the rest got to party.
Keeping the original conversation in this thread:
The person who posted the TCM Remembers 2008 on YouTube has posted the updated version with Van Johnson. I hope no more updates will be needed.
Serge @ 925: There's a picture of me at a friend's Flickr site.
I'd ask her if it could be used for your page, but I don't feel I contribute enough to be included as part of the community. I'll have to think about it. Thanks for the offer!
Serge @ 912:
That's the part where you quote William Shatner in Nightmare at 30,000 Feet: "Do I look insane?"
I fear too many people would be tempted to agree. :)
Serge @ 884: It's nice to confirm that I'm not *totally* insane. :) I figured the explanation must be that TCM had added him after this video went up.
Serge @ 881: When does he show up? I've watched the video at that link twice and didn't see him.
I hadn't seen 2003. TCM didn't arrive in Canada until two years ago (much to my utter joy and dismay: I had wanted it here for years, but between it and the TiVo, I've gone from watching very little television to more than I have time for), and I tend to ignore YouTube.
Serge @ 871: Unfortunately, 2008 isn't over. Van Johnson, who died Friday, isn't included.
*waves to Patrick from Scarborough (eastern Toronto)*
We have to be hopeful about the US race here. Our fellow citizens keep voting for the conservatives and Harper!
My husband (who has voted already) asked me last night if we can go to Toronto's Democrats Abroad gathering on election night. I don't enjoy crowds, but it could be interesting to share the experience.
Best wishes to Teresa and Patrick. Yay for Elise!
A belated Happy Birthday (and Anniversary) to all who celebrated yesterday, including my friend John and cousin Adam. I was busy celebrating my husband's birthday, among other things. I took him to see Spamalot.
I wouldn't assume that Sarah Palin knew that her daughter was pregnant before saying yes to McCain. I can easily imagine a 17-year-old not telling her parents that she's pregnant until there's no other choice (when she's clearly starting to show, for example), especially if she knows her parents' views on the topic of pre-marital sex and abortion.
I think I read somewhere that Palin's children weren't told about the VP announcement until shortly beforehand, so the "um, Mom..." moment may not have happened until just before it, or even right after.
Don't get me wrong: I think Palin's an awful choice, but I also can't help thinking that there's a possibility she didn't know about the pregnancy until the wheels were already in motion.
Don't forget Fanny Price!
Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog is online for free again -- albeit with "limited commercial interruption" -- at Hulu. There's a choice of watching the original three episodes or one full-length version.
It does work for international viewers.
Xopher @ 915: the unfortunate events of 1066 (featuring Ethelred the Totally Clueless)
I believe that you've accidentally mixed up Ethelred with Harold Godwinson, or the Norman invasion with some of the invasions by the Danes. Ethelred II died in 1016 (in my timeline, anyway). :)
