re: #750, KeithS
I'd just point out that all shirts, pants, skirts, dresses, socks, underwear, and so on have to have holes, just to be able to get your appendages through
nitpick
Socks don't; you don't put your feet through a sock in normal use. The rest of your examples are OK, modulo arguments about the integrity of a buttoned skirt.

Real, but not there ... OK, it's letter-e letter-h at electrichedgehog dot net.
Um. Not sure how to put this. Open Thread, right? Are there any Fluorospherians around Springfield, Missouri from whom I [or my son] might get advice if my son's imminent planned visit there goes pear-shaped? [The email address is real.]
re: #72, Jon H
Actually, the Tenori-on frame is apparently made out of magnesium, so it ought to be pretty sturdy.
Good for hot music, then.
re: #352, Julie, "Surface Tension"
Perhaps best appreciated with the other pantropy
stories, collected in eg this handy volume of "The Seedling Stars" (Arrow, 1972).
re: #317, Diatryma
A friend of mine asked me for a list of stories with various characteristics. The one I couldn't come up with was "has no male speaking roles". I can't think of a one. "Female characters with no romantic attachments" were also thin on the ground.
"No romantic attachments": Telzey Amberdon. fx:brooding Ash?
"Has no male speaking parts": Sorry.

Nope. "disemvowelled"
That's the other alternative. Nevertheless, one of the words in that phrase is "not", disemvowelled. Hence my suspicion about the comma on the stair.
re: #589
n f th wrds n ths phrs s nt disemvowelled. Wht s t?
Ha! not. But I suspect the non-existent comma disambiguates ...

Does anyone know of any other names which automatically mean the named being is a dog?
to which #667 ::: J Austin responded:
Fifi?
Fifi's not a dog-only name, surely? It is au-pair Fifi in Archer's Goon who says (from memory, details may be blurred) "We seem to have somebody's goon".
Apropos of #805, #809, #811 referring to DWJ's Deep Secret, may I mention Diana Wynne Jones: A Conference taking place on the suitably celebratory 3rd-5th July of this very year at the University of the West of England, Bristol, a mere stone's throw from where my evil twin works?

It's your basic PHD camera.
Useful for doctoring the images, then?
re: Marilee, #496
Identify book time. A friend's dentist wants the name of a book where a dentist travels through space helping aliens with their teeth. He insists it isn't by James White.
It's Prostho Plus, by Piers Anthony. Not so heavy-handed as to be unamusing.
re #179, Dave Bell.
HE AINT DEAD.
So, for recovery, are you watching episodes of
Bones or listening to Traffic off the road?
re: sisuile #56: recorded by Trees as Soldiers Three on their 1970 album On the Shore, featuring the stunning Celia Humphris on vocals.
re: Tim Hall #54: why yes, that's very appropriate, especially considering the costuming, as seen on the Castles and Dreams DVD.
re: debbie @246.
Thanks for the suggestions, Debbie. I shall consult maps and decide what to do ... probably on the Thursday evening after wearing my feet out at the Essen Spielfair.
In like vein to nerdycellist @160:
I shall be staying in Dusseldorf for a couple of evenings (22/23/24) in lateish October. What's a Must See for someone with an evening to spare? I'll be based a few minutes from the hauptbahnhof and will be walking or U-bahning with Definite Directions. (I speak enough German to order a latte and explain that I'm English ...)
My first offering in trade is a bit obvious: if anyone is visiting Bath (in England ...) then the Roman Baths are IMAO a Must See: not too pricey, of the order of an hour or so to go round, and very revealing as to history &co.
The less obvious second offering from Bath is the Herschel Museum of Astronomy. History and artifacts, yum.
Thanks to nerdycellist for a topic I was going to raise in an open thread anyway ...
I had a deathspam a few months ago. I /knew/ it was all bluster and wind, but that didn't stop me feeling upset and dirty. I reported it, of course, but what can ISPs/IT departments /do/? Pretty much nothing, it seems.
Don't let's forget amid the fun-poking that these vile threats are hurtful in and of themselves.
re: #61, Rikibeth
It doesn't happen with rock concerts (no matter how long) because the music is broken up into 3-to-5-minute songs, with LYRICS.
What counts as "a song" and "a rock concert" for these purposes? Magenta's Ballard of Samuel Layne and Metamorphosis are both about 20 minutes long and part of their gig at Cardiff recently. Similarly Panic Room's Endgame (10 minutes) and The Dreaming [1] (20 minutes). Is it the substructure that counts, so that the songs are just part of the pieces?

[1] No Sandman connection as far as I can see.
