What really bothers me (besides the pro-sex slavery angle, the homophobia and the standard claim that America was founded as a judeo-Christian nation) is that this guy gets published while my thoughtful, incisive and well crafted prose languishes somewhere in a slush pile. One almost needs to be a racist, gay-bashing throwback to get into print these days. Ugh.

Rejection letters are like war medals. I have half a dozen or so at this point and in some ways would feel a little betrayed if I didn't amass at leats a dozen. From the tone, I get the feeling Most Agents and Editors find my MS to be a catagory 13, which is heartening as it means I simply haven't found the right publisher yet.

I get miffed for all of about thirty three seconds and then realize that it isn't personal. These people don't know me. I'm a stranger asking an impertinant question of a busy profeshoinal. I'm lucky they don't send howlers.

I too chuckled but I couldn't even begin to describe why to my grandmother. Even little Borges jokes make me happy.

Plants and pain: oh, c'mon. How many people writing in this blog actually believe that plants feel pain in the same way that a cat or a calf feel pain? That plants have aversion responses is hardly a surprise. If they had no interest in survival, evolution would have obliged them, by now.

There's some evidence that suggests broccoli has a rudementary nervous system, and let's not forget that there have been scientific studies done for more than fifty years now on the emotional resonses of plants and not all of them are just crackpot new agey nonsense.

My point is, we have to eat livign things to survive. That's Nature, folks. And highmindedness isn't going to rewire 3 million years of primate evolution just because some hippy likes to pet kittens a little too much.

So enjoy your steak, have a nice green salad on the side and tell TETa to take a walk off the nearest pier.

Norfolk, VA is my hometown and we have to put up with their shenannigans constantly. And by shenannigans I mean vandalism, threats and sheer lunatic zeal. Theresa's right, they are more like a cult than a political organization, nt quite as bad as say, the Christian Coalition but getting there.

In light of the ALA-Ashcroft scrap of a few months back, couldn't this be an ill-considered attempt to round up reference librarians, who live and die by almanacs?

As a reference librarian in training, this is just another slap in the face from Herr Ashcroft. One of these days Crisco Johnny is going to realize that you don't mess with Librarians! Because in the Information Age, those who control access to the Info, control the world.

When I read (and when I write) it's like a full blown movie in my head. Sometimes, after I'm done reading ans laying in bed dreaming of stories, I go so far as to cast the book with actors and even a director and envision scenes done in the director's style. I so desperately want to "see" Leonora Carrington's The Hearing Trumpet as directed by Jean-Paul Jenet (sp? Director of Amilie and City of Lost Children). I think it would be beautiful.

Though Cherokee did borrow some Latin (English) letter shapes, the meanings were completely unrelated. Sequoya was illiterate; he'd seen English writing but didn't know how it worked.

I find it odd that someone would refer to a man who devised an entire written language as "illiterate," simply because he wasn't schooled in the King James English. But we all have our cultural blind spots, I suppose.

Sequoya also started the first and only Cherokee language newspaper but I guess that just reinforces his "illiteracy."

I actually learned about Technorati from this site and have checked it often to see my stats. I'm still relatively new to the blogosphere and so it's a thrill, especially the first time when I discovered that in fact someone had linked to my site. It's nice to know, gives a boost of confidence to my writing to know, concretely that at least someone is reading my stuff.

just one from the farmer, alas
and one from myself

I've never fired a gun. I have held both an M-16nd an M-60 before though. The M-16 is surprisingly heavy for its size.

Recently (as in th elast year or so) I've been thinking seriously of going down to the shootin' range and learning the ins and outs, maybe even purchasing a firearm.

Any suggestions?
