Happy Birthday to Xopher, to Sharon Lee, and all the others born today. Happy Anniversary to Abi's parents and to Jeff and his husband. Yeah, Margene!
Today is payday and my last day of work this week. No alarm clock tomorrow morning!
It was overcast as I drove home this afternoon and I realized just how much autumn clematis there is around town. The blooms are sweet-smelling and almost glow in the dusk. The difference between autumn clematis and all sorts of other annoying, vining things is that when I sprayed Roundup on the huge mound of stuff growing on my fence, the clematis was the only thing that grew back.
Reading through this thread, I just had a really horrible thought. Others have mentioned how the Palin selection is taking away all the momentum for Obama and Biden coming out of the Democratic convention. What if that's the the sole purpose for the Palin selection? The media spends the long, Labor Day weekend (and possibly next week if the GOP convention is postponed because of Hurricane Gustav) talking about Palin. Then they go into the convention and it's "discovered" that her actions in the firing of the commissioner of public safety were totally inappropriate. So she withdraws as VP candidate, McCain chooses someone else, and the GOP gets to have its cake and eat it too. The Dems lose any advantage they should have had coming out of Denver and the GOP would have a new "surprise" VP candiate for the media to obsess about coming out of the GOP convention.
Tell me I'm wrong, please.

If you live outside of the US (making the assumption), I don't think you can send seeds to Iowa. I think the Dept of Agriculture has very strict rules about plants and seeds coming in from outside the US. At least, I'm pretty sure seeds were one of the things I had to promise I was not hiding in my household goods when they were shipped back from Germany.
I do think some Iowans would get a laugh out of growing rice in the flooded fields. Most years, trying to grow rice would require serious irrigation. And if the rain stops sometime soon, those fields could all be very dry in a month. (or not, if this is another version of 1993)

While rain would wash away the pollen you've got right now, flooding tends to increase the mold count for years to come.

I am more barbarian than you. I think I've read 82 of those titles. 44% of the ones I've read were written in the 19th century. While many of those can be credited to attending a liberal arts college, the authors I've read include Wells, Verne, Doyle, Twain, Carroll, Alcott (Louisa May), Poe, Stoker and Shelley (Mary). I suspect I'd read a significant number of those in high school.
I made the mistake of majoring in English in college because I liked to read. As a result, I haven't read anything labelled "literature" since. These days I browse almost exclusively in the "genre" sections (mystery and SF/F).
b. durbin, Congratulations on your dude! Really cute pictures.

My understanding of dust mites was that they lived on skin flakes and the like, so they're more likely to be found in bedding and carpets, not on the dust on books -- but I've been wrong before.
I really love the Swiffer dusters, because they grab the dust and it doesn't float around. There are the flat ones, which are really meant to be used on the floor, but are great for smooth surfaces. And then there are the fluffy ones that are sold as dusters. I think some of the microfiber cloths are supposed to do the same thing, but I haven't tried them yet.
It's so good to see ML back up. Many, many thanks to all the folks who are working to find all the pieces and put it back together again.
The Kansas City Star reports that ethanol-blended gasoline provides less energy than conventional gasoline.
"...over the course of a year of normal driving, it would take an additional 40 gallons of E-10* to go the same distance as conventional gas. If they were both priced the same, it would mean an extra $120."

What part of the state will you be living/working in? ConQuest is in Kansas City on Memorial Day weekend.
