My first introduction to the work was in a piano bar on Camac, actually in Philadelphia, where my friend sang the John/Abigail duet with the pianist.
Tears everywhere.
To this day, "Saltpeter, John!" from the reprise gets me every time.

Another s/r nightmare apparently happened at the St. Louis P-D back in the day, when the word "black" became "African-American."
This was corrected after the words "late-model African-American Ford" appeared in newsprint.
