Oh no. Praying.
No kids here, thanks to the rain. Of course, out record is 4 Trick-or-Treaters, so we weren't surprised. (you'd think a Dead End street would be the perfect place for Halloween, wouldn't you?)
Jumbo candy bars, anyone?
Re: #321
Too much Mead? Um, I'll be leaving now...
Re: #22
Also Elizabeth Moon's "Speed of Dark."
An odd random thought...
I know nothing about the original text, and I assume someone ruled this out centuries ago, but is there any chance that "in its mother's milk" originally meant "Still nursing?" In other words, don't cook them until they've gotten bigger and can feed more people?
Looks like it's a synonym for either "boil" or "simmer."

Re: #17
I think the song should apply to them too.
Re: #7 Really? Wow. It has Elnora NY, where I grew up, and it's only about a mile long. Maybe that's because it was a 19th century stagecoach stop.
What a neat site! It has my town: http://www.epodunk.com/cgi-bin/genInfo.php?locIndex=1067
We don't have a rock, though.
"BTW, is it only me who thinks a good voice is also a kind of physical beauty?"
I once knew a woman who lived in a group home and worked in a sheltered workshop. Her age and IQ were both around 70, she was totally blind, had been abused throughout her life and couldn't do much for herself, including have more than the simplest conversation. She was skinny and wrinkled and generally disheveled.
She loved Patsy Cline. And every so often she'd break into "Crazy," and sound JUST LIKE Patsy Cline. She'd tip her head back, her face, with its permanently-closed eyes, would light up, and this rich, resonant, vibrant voice would pour out.
She was beautiful.
Re: Chicken pox vaccine
I never had chicken pox, but I was exposed so often as a kid my parents assumed I must've picked up a mild case somewhere, become immune, and never realized it.
To my horror, a few years ago I learned that I do NOT have chicken pox antibodies, and that because I'm on immunosuppressants I couldn't get the shot because it uses a live virus.
I've heard enough stories about chicken pox in immunnosuppressed adults to scare me silly, and I could easily get accidentally exposed to it through my nephews. Does anyone know if there's a "killed vaccine" or something out there? Thanks!
Re: #38
You wouldn't happen to have ROF #1, would you?
My dad likes to tell the story about how he and a friend went to the girls' dorm looking for someone to sew on a button. The friend was dating one of the girls. 2 others flipped a coin to double-date with my dad, and as he puts it, "Your mother either won or lost, depending on how you look at it."
My biggest "little thing": I had discovered online bulletin boards (BBSs), but since I was broke and living with my parents, I only called the free local ones. Then I found one named after a series I'd been reading- long distance. My dad said "As long as you'll pay the phone bill, go for it."
I got into chat with the Sysop, and at one point he had to leave, and put me into chat with the Trivia Administrator.
Well, we chatted for 4 hours, and it took a while to pay off that phone bill, but it was worth it. We'll celebrate our 15th anniversary this summer.
I met a friend who introduced me to the hitherto unheard-of concept of "Science-fiction Convention" and made me part of a whole new world.
