Joel @ 74: It's a gateway to candy-making, but I would use tinted candy melts to mold the ears and antenna. If you'd rather build up than pour, you could shape them out of chocolate clay, fondant or marzipan.

Linkmeister @ 96: very old Singers are not terribly hard to bring back into usable condition. Time-consuming, but not too difficult. I found a c. 1915 Singer model 66 treadle in a barn once. I had to pay a woodworking shop to fabricate a broken piece of the cabinet and purchased a new treadle belt, but otherwise it was a lot of rust removal and oiling. It's nice to have for machine quilting while the household is asleep.

As for what I'm making, I'm knocking out a lot of quick, simple baby quilts because it's my husband just started a new job and we need a little more financial cushion to be comfortable between paying rent and his first paycheck.

Nicole @ 20: A friend of mine was a busser at the Old Spaghetti Factory when he was in school. One night he saw most of the waiters huddled around crying and said "Jeez, you're crying like Princess Diana died or something."

He really has a knack for awkward timing.

Teancom @19: Denver's long-established annual sci-fi/fantasy convention is MileHiCon. It occurs every October.

Colorado Springs has an annual sci-fi convention in February, COSine.

Other annual cons in Denver include the anime convention Nan Desu Kan and gaming conventions Tacticon, GenghisCon and BenCon.

@Lizzy L.: I found the cache of DKG books amusing because it was in an area not known for its baseball fans.

A few months later I found a cache of Stephen Ambrose's Citizen-Soldiers at the same dollar store. I bought them all. I gave a few to friends and resold the rest on Amazon.com to fund a small shopping spree at Edward McKay Used Books.

I once found two dozen remaindered copies of her memoir Wait Till Next Year in a dollar store.

Julie L.@36: You are much more adventurous than I am to make your own miso. We just buy a brand of semi-locally-made miso paste (Miso Master) to minimize the shipping impact and call it good enough.

All the interesting cultures in our refrigerator are for cheesemaking.

Natto is perfectly appropriate... when cooking breakfast for hungover people who complain that menudo is nasty.

Bill Higgins @16: That seems an odd perspective to have on a nation. But hey, why not?

My perspective is skewed by categorizing uncategorized Wikipedia articles.

I now appreciate the difference between the Indian and Pakistani parts of Punjab and the number of people with biographical articles hailing from Lahore.

I know something about Pakistan, albeit mostly by its number of uncategorized Wikipedia articles.

(My husband recently gave me a t-shirt that said "I edit, therefore I am." Yay Wikimedia swag.)

Skwid @ 25: my husband went through that last year. He recommends playing up your experience with Crystal Reports and that if you have/can gain MS DBA certification you've got it made. The medical IT company where he works just hired someone with a Crystal/MSDBA mix of experience. He was very impressed with the applicant throughout the hiring process.

If you'd like a few recommendations of IT recruiting firms we'd work with again, contact me via e-mail.

'Splung' is the noise my sewing machine makes when I accidentally sew over a pin.

Domitian was assassinated in the year 96.

Chip @ 68: I get most of my SCOTUS coverage from NPR. I wouldn't be surprised to hear Nina Totenberg let "Scalito" slip. Once I heard her say "What do you mean we, white man?" while recounting the day's court activity.

joann @45:

I wonder if those triangles are an artifact of Texas roads; there are several spots like that in north Dallas. Addison is full of them, even navigating by foot with a handheld GPS unit. (The area is chockablock with geocaches and geodetic benchmarks.)
