I'd guess something like this, where unlike real life you can go back and try to save everybody if you miss one of them, would be great for alleviating survivor's guilt, and anxiety over whether you're truly prepared for an emergency situation.

I think violent mental illness in the Left tends to sidetrack. The far left is more friendly to recreational pharmaceuticals, so some of the extreme types self-medicate into harmlessness. The left is also much more receptive to odd artistic expressions.

And the tendency to talk about things rather than do them, while deplorable in a Congresscritter, is a good thing in someone who has violent fantasies of what they want to do to, say, Congresscritters.
Posted on entry Russia Invades Georgia ::: August 08, 2008, 09:27 AM:
You left out the two Russian planes that the Georgians shot down.

The lady who sits next to me at work is Russian. She says that North Ossetia is Russian, South Ossetia is half-and-half and has been mostly independant from Georgia since the early '90s. Recently Georgia moved to take more administrative control, re-escalating the conflict. Back in the early '90s Russia had problems of their own so they didn't take action when Georgia was fighting the rebels, but now they seem to think they've got a plurality of the provincial natives who want to rejoin.

At the risk of Godwining this thread, a certain Austrian wrote about his struggle while he was in prison.

And then there's Boethius, who wrote The Consolations of Philosophy while in prison.
Posted on entry McCain Lies ::: June 10, 2008, 01:43 PM:
From what I've read of the story, John McCain didn't adopt Bridget, Cindy did. She'd flown over to Bangladesh with her children's charity, and was flying back with two children who needed better medical care. She became so fond of the one girl that she started adoption proceedings while on the plane, and when she landed she told McCain that he'd just acquired a new kid, whether he liked it or not.

It's a great story, marred only by the fact that she was also stealing painkillers from that charity while all this was going on, to feed her addiction.

So, it's possible he lied and he's senile.
Posted on entry McCain Lies ::: June 09, 2008, 12:41 PM:
When McCain momentarily released his medical records, the reporters managed to note that he took "simvastatin to control his cholesterol levels; hydrochlorothiazide for kidney stone prevention; aspirin for blood clot prevention; Zyrtec, an antihistamine, as necessary for nasal allergies; Ambien CR, as necessary for sleep when traveling; and a multiple vitamin tablet."

Ambien and Zyrtec together can cause confusion, amnesia, and all sorts of other mental side effects.

The phrase oozes entitlement, doesn't it?
Posted on entry The Secret Service writes off security for candidates ::: February 25, 2008, 10:04 AM:
The same thing doesn't happen at McCain rallies because he doesn't have SS protection yet, and also he doesn't draw enough interest to have huge lines at his rallies.
Posted on entry Self-Absolution ::: February 08, 2008, 12:44 PM:
albatross #60 - that's the beauty of inherant contempt - the Justice Department has nothing to do with it. The enforcement is carried out by the police forces answering directly to the House or Senate, and there's actually a jail cell that titularly belongs to the legislature, which they 'lease' back to the Justice Department.

Now, the Justice Department has a much bigger armed force, but hopefully most policemen have moral problems with acting against other policemen going about their legally assigned duties.
Posted on entry Self-Absolution ::: February 08, 2008, 08:32 AM:
The House actually does have the ability to arrest and imprison someone, for one particular crime. It's called inherant contempt (wikipedia, scroll down). It was last used in 1934. I'm not sure why the House hasn't started these proceedings with Bolton and Miers ignoring their subpoenas, but the ability is there, if they choose to use it.

20.5% Edwards

19.8% Clinton

11.4% Huckabee (R)

ABC reporting that the guy is local, told his son this morning "watch the news". Mid-40s, graying hair.

In fact, I'd suggest that whatever one calls the practice if we have people willing to volunteer to undergo its use then it's fair to use it on an enemy.

You know, I'm willing to volunteer to have sex with (insert name of cute actor who I have sekrit crush on), so therefore it's fair to force an enemy to have sex with a guy. I'm also willing to eat ham and cheese sandwiches and participate in silly mock-Satanist rituals, therefore it's fair to force a religiously devout enemy to do the same thing.

An acting AG can serve for up to 200 days without Senate confirmation.

Also, when the Bushes came in to the White House, their exact phrase was, "The grownups will be in charge", not "The adults". There's a different nuance to 'grownup' - and it doesn't necessarily imply maturity.

Even if you make the most positive possible reading of Bush's war record, you're still left with the fact that he used his Congressman daddy's connections to get a cushy position in a unit that would never see overseas service, and spent most of that commitment stoned out of his gourd.

Of course he remembers Vietnam positively. It was a great time of life for him.

With Snape's fondness for Dumbledore, I can see him commissioning or painting his own Dumbledore portrait before he's named Headmaster. The ability to paint would fit in with his Moody Artistic persona. Probably the first time he'd ever used white paint, though.

Trelawny's crystal ball dropping several floors possibly killed someone, I would think.

In the real world it would, anyhow. But this is magic.

Kids, don't drop crystal balls on your parents' heads at home.

You'd think there'd be a postwar population boom in Ginny's year, then.
