I think that a LOT of older-generation people (ie. my generation, and I mean both M and F) think keyboards are for secretaries, and that Not Typing as a sign of success. About 12 years ago I was volunteering for a local non-profit at a lawyer's office. He didn't even know how to turn his secretary's typewriter on, and seemed almost proud of that. I believe that it was a status marker for him. Or maybe a macho thing.

He's actually no longer with the band (no hard feelings, schedule conflicts), but he's on one of their CD's and has a bit role in their most recent video (he's a gruesomely wounded soldier).

The band he's in now is Amelia, also a Portland band.

Commercial Break: The Decembrists have several CD's on the list. Everyone should buy these, because my son plays on one of them. Moody, literate alternative. Yes, I'm shameless. So sue me.

I've lived much of my life in places reputed to be shitholes, and none of them really were. Portland, Oregon whre I am now has actually been recently upgraded to become an important slacker destination, but it was a shithole when I first came here. No offense intended. Well, some, maybe.

Concision sounds fine. But what is it with Philadelphia? I thought it was supposed to be a shithole, but they have Rittenhouse, Atrios, and Slacktivist.

Doug:

"Hey guys, there's no Santa Claus, no devil, no massive conspiracy, just boring ol' day to day life."

Yeah, and no WMD either.

Plenty of hard-nosed businessmen are end-timers, as convenient. They actually do believe it, but adapt the belief so it doesn't inconvenience them in any way.

The Bush brothers remind me of the villain in the movie who swaggers around saying "My father owns this town". Guys like that can have a cocky charm, as W. does, and plenty of people suck up to them. (Jeb, on the other hand, has more of the creepy meanness of the effete rich boy).

There's a big controversy afoot as to whether Bush-haters are as nasty as Clinton-haters were. I don't think so, not yet. We should try harder.

America's enormous prison population is the 500 lb. gorilla of American politics. It isn't an issue and it isn't talked about. Knee-jerk tough-on-crime slogans is all we get from anyone but the Libertarians.

Nancy -- the same math applies to the stats "guys who won't commit". If five women have had bad experiences with that type of guy, maybe it's the same guy five different times. The willing-to-commit guys don't circulate long.
